I saw her soul leave her body as she exhaled, and then she had no more needs, no more reason; she was released from her body, and being released, she continued her journey elsewhere, high in the firmament where soul material gathers and plays out all the dreams and joys of which we temporal beings can barely conceive, all the things that are beyond our comprehension, but even so, are not beyond our attainment if we choose to attain them, and believe that we truly can.”

(170 Stein)

This quote was made by Enzo the Dog after his best friend, Dave's wife died of a brain disease. Though the book foreshadows Eve's death, this quote still made me sad which is one of the reason that I am not sure if I like the book or not, the reason being: its just too sad. Any way, this quote shows how Enzo believes that after her death, Eve is taken to some for of Heaven of which no living being can comprehend. This was a nice thought because the book shows how much of struggle merely waking up was for Eve and the idea of her being in a better place is pleasing to a sympathetic reader.

Response to Review

At first glace, I disagree with this review's first paragraph. Even though it was not the first time a book had been narrated by an animal, I really loved the idea and it was probably my most favourite aspect of this book. Everyone loves dogs so writing from one's point of view is a surefire way to have a good book. On the other hand, I agree with the review when it states, "I felt that the drama just went over the top—could anyone possibly have as much bad luck as this Denny?" One of the reason that I wasn't a huge fan of this book was that it was simply too sad for my liking. Just think about all of the terrible things that happen to our protagonists. (SPOILER ALERT): the dog dies (rule of thumb, if you want any book or movie to be tragic, kill the dog), the wive dies from a brain disease, Dave looses custody of his daughter, Dave is placed on a sex offender list for untrue allegations, Dave is running out of money and his parent-in laws hate him and want him to be hurt. All in all, both me and the reviewer liked this book but we both agree that it was just to depressing for our liking.

Cast Role

I'll be honest, I don't know too many actors and this may seem cliche and cheesy but I would have to cast Morgan Freeman as the voice of Enzo. The reason for this, is that in the book, Enzo had an almost philosophical way of thinking about life which he shows when he talks about Eve's death in the quote I chose. He seems very wise and knowledgeable and needs an actor know for those aspects in his films. The voice of Morgan Freeman just sounds so wise and he even played the part of God in one of his movies.(what is more knowledgeable than the voice of God?) In my opinion, there is no voice actor better for the job.
