Carol Jago shows middle and high school teachers how to create English classrooms where students care about living literate lives and develop into proficient independent readers. Students need books that mirror their own experiences and if you teach literature that you love, your students will be more likely to love it too.

I picked this book just before I began reformulating my persuasive unit for this year. While I didn't read it in its entirety, I pulled certain resources and techniques from it that I used with my own students. There was a reading/writing connection throughout the book; my class has a strong writing component that requires rigorous attention. The books provided information, explanation, and resources that I could use within my lessons.

There are two versions of this: the first deals with fiction and the second nonfiction. In it, many of the discussions we have already had are covered: Lexiles vs. text complexity, engaging students in deeper analysis, and encouraging academic conversation. The authors identify what they call Signposts of author moves that are common to most literature (and nonfiction in that book). They give sample lessons, some re-printable materials, and links online to videos of student discussions.

I love that this text explores the CCSS but in a way that "gets it." Teachers know what they're doing, and can see when and where the new standards exceed our expectations.....as well as where they may fall short. As a result, the book is a really refreshing and helpful look at how to creatively and constructively meet the standards while also doing what is truly "in the best interest of students." Loved it! I've never had so many sticky notes in a professional book. ;)
