I'm Korean-American

My Korean heritage is really important to me. My family is definitely an Asian household. We eat Korean food, we watch Korean media, and we take our shoes off when we come inside. But we aren't just Korean -- we're still half white. I am proud to be American, even after the insanity of the last five years. We have problems, yes, but it's getting better. The recent rise of K-culture in America has been cool, but a little awkward. Sometimes it feels like the explosion of Korean products is just thinly veiled cultural appropriation. However, it's nice to know that people are at least trying to enjoy Korean things responsibly.

I'm Queer

Hi, my name is River, my pronouns are they/them, and I'm bisexual. The queer community is a vibrant and diverse group of people, all united by our common differences. No two queer people are identical, and I love that about us! Another thing I love about being part of the community is being welcomed in. The gaydar is real, and we will use it to offer you snacks. Seriously, gay people are far-and-away the friendliest group of people I've ever met. Of course there's the occasional dickhead, but most of us are very chill.

I'm ADHD

ADHD affects most of my thoughts and actions. I don't know how to hold a conversation without leaping from topic to topic like a pinball machine. I constantly interrupt other people and even myself because my thoughts run at about a billion miles per hour. My brain is simply built different. Even with all the social difficulties ADHD causes, I wouldn't want to be "normal". After all, normal is just a setting on a dryer, or something like that. But I like the way my brain works! It's organized chaos. I believe I'm more creative and empathetic because of my ADHD.

I spent my entire high school career as part of several band programs. Much of my time was spent doing band things, like practicing or attending rehearsal or lightly vandalizing other schools' equipment. Being part of that whole was one of the biggest factors to shape my life experience. Being a member of the band allowed me to experience things that I would never have dreamed of. Learning to be a performer genuinely changed my life.

By the way, the big white circle in the center of that line is me!

I love creating. The act of making something with my hands is just incredibly satisfying. I draw, paint, , and , but most of all, I sew. Before sociology, my major was fashion design. I've done repairs for strangers. I've made clothes for friends and family. Just recently, I made a wedding dress with two days' notice for my sister-in-law. One of my favorite things to do is solving problems in unusual or straight-up weird ways. It's pretty common for me to repurpose something for every part of a project.
