But it changes a persons motive for the good and the bad. In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since. ‘Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,’ he told me, ‘just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.’ (page 1) . He changes his identify but with bad comes good. Gatsby tells nick about his life and his past, Gatsby then undermines his entire lie by claiming that he grew up in San Francisco, which is not remotely close to the Midwest. He then claims to have lived like a "young rajah" following the war by collecting jewels, painting, and hunting big game animals in Paris, Venice, and Rome. At this point in the conversation, Nick finds Gatsby's story ridiculously hilarious and has to suppress his laughter. "The very phrases were worn so threadbare that they evoked no image except that of a turbaned "character" leaking sawdust at every pore as he pursued a tiger through the Bois de Boulogne."
