Animals also feel pain- The main theme portrayed throughout Black Beauty is animals also feel pain. Black beauty and many other horses were treated horribly throughout the passage. Somebody examples of this are the breaking-in of horses, the bits put in their mouths, the saddle put on their backs, the horrific check rein, the pulling of heavy carts, and getting whipped. Anna Sewell gives these horses a voice hoping it will help people realize that animals feel pain too.

Anna often uses imagery in the story to help readers better understand what owners did to treat their horses badly. “The horse was an old worn/out chestnut, with an ill-kept coat, and bones that showed plainly through. The knees were knocked over and the forelegs were unsteady. I had been eating somebody hay, and the wind rolled a little lock of it that way and the poor little creature put out he long thin neck, and picked it up, and looked about for more”.

This is one of many similes in the story.

Although I would have rather read a sci-fi book I really liked Black Beauty. The format the book was written in is not something you would see in a modern book. Black Beauty has opened my eyes about animals being mistreated. It is unlike any book I have ever read. The best part wasn’t it was written through a horses perspective. I would recommend this book to people. Idea it opened my eyes about animals being abused then it should open other people eyes to. If more people read this book maybe there will be a change.
