By clicking on the photo, you can view the interactive infographic that I made. This infographic was made from the perspective of me as a science student who was tasked to demonstrate understanding of the nervous system at the end of the unit, hence this is a summative assessment. The infographic contains links to a YouTube video, and two other sites that give more details about the nervous system. One of those links is given as a clickable image. Take a look.

Reflections and lessons acquired from using Canva to create an interactive infographics

The infographic shared on this Padlet was created for the purpose of doing a summative assessment. We will therefore discuss the impact using cover to enhance out learning.

Benefits
Coming into this module, I had proficient knowledge of Canva as I had used it many times before to create blog post designs like thumbnails, blog banners, etc. and later when I begun teaching English, to create various worksheets and classroom creatives. Canva has proven to be a versatile and fundamental tool for creating beautiful and professional designs with no design expertise. It helps make lessons more visually appealing. Implementing varied and carefully made visuals can help improve the learner’s analytical skills (Raiyn, 2016: 115-121). Making designs interactive helps use represent our knowledge in more diverse way and since Canva is a popular app, more students may need little persuasion to get on bored with using it in class. In fact it may bring excitement.

Challenges:
Canva is such a useful app so much so the only negative things that I can mention is that which can be solved if one would just upgrade to a paid version. The free version already offers more than enough, but it has some limitations in terms of templates and images that you could use. It also has limitations with time when making a voiceover. Challenges will be different for every school or class by depending the purpose for using Canva, school’s perspectives and the kind of Canva creative they are using. The teachers must anticipate potential challenges and think about how they would tackle them. For example, if one was to give students a task to create an info graphic to demonstrate what they have learned just like what was done for my info graphic, then the teacher may need to anticipate challenges that may come with submissions and assessing the work.

Reflections:
It was my first time making an interactive creative on Canva. This opened other opportunities for me to use Canva. Before this lesson I had never thought of how I can use canva in more ways than just to create a pretty pdfs or other creatives for the internet. This new knowledge will help me create more diverse tasks for my students and assist them in demonstrating what they have learned.

References:
1.
Five ways to incorporate Canva in your classroom

Here are some ideas on how to use Canva to help enhance learning.

1. Make custom book report worksheets:
Canva has many book report templates to choose from, however, you can customize them to suit your students (as individuals or a class) and for the books you’re teaching.

Tip: Take your time to customize a template that will work for most of your books. Create a copy and keep the original in a separate file. Use the copy to change small details to make your worksheets more targeted to your students.

2. Use it to assess your students understanding
When starting a section or a unit with your class. Let your students know that in the end they will have to present their understanding in the form of an infographic (or any other creative you may want them to make). Let them know everything they need to include in the graphic before you start the unit. You can also ask them to all collaborate on an infographic and assign each other tasks.

Tip: let the students know they’ll have to print their A3 (of whatever size) infographic and display it somewhere around their class.

3. Create classroom creatives
Use Canva to make visually appealing classroom rules and expectations, motivation, or another other creative that will be helpful, motivational and uplifting for your students and helpful foster a positive atmosphere.

Tip: You can find templates for almost any creative you may want to make. For example, just type “classroom rules” and multiple ready to use templates will pop up.

4. Collaborative comic strips
Hone your students’ creativity by giving them tasks where they can apply their knowledge creatively. A good way of assessment is giving students some options to choose from for their assessments and also allowing them to choose how they would want to be assessed. Making a comic strip may be a fun and meaningful way for students to demonstrate their understanding.

Tip: Make time for students to present their work so that you don’t have to go over everything by yourself hence giving yourself extra work.

5. Creating presentations
Use canva to make interactive presentations and have students interact with it in class. This will help you be more available during class time to assist your students and cater for them individually.

Benefits:
Interactive lessons are a good way to take away the attention from the teacher in the classroom. It gives students the opportunity to engage in the materials they are learning on their own and forces them to think about it a bit more. This type of lesson could also be used in an online class, for revisions, in a hybrid class or in a regular class. Asking the students to go through the presentation as individuals and answer questions as they go through the presentation help the students thoughtfully engage in their work.

Challenges:
Perhaps the biggest challenge that may deter many teachers from using such tools is the prep time. Teachers will need to put a lot of time and thought to their presentations to ensure that they actually fulfill their purpose, otherwise they run the risk of this way of learning falling through. Any of these digital strategies to enhance learning can also be detrimental if not applied properly.

Reflection:
Making this presentation made me even more enthusiastic about teaching. It presented me with some strategic solutions for how I can best make myself available to cater for my students as individuals and group given the time we have in class. I quickly realized however, that even though this is something I will definitely implement in class, I need to think about all the preparation work that I need to put in and perhaps accept that I will not alway be able to do that.

Reinforce an important topic/ idea that you think may have not been understood
Important concepts get missed all the time and we must think of a way to drive these points home. An interactive presentation may help remedy this.

Tip: Making the students go over presentation as individuals may be more beneficial. They can get to think more about what they are learning.

3. Create an interactive quiz
The video shared previously shows how you can go about make and interactive quiz. There are better tools for quizzes out there however this is another way to use presentations in class.

4.
Reflections and lessons acquired from making and online quiz on Google forms.

Benefits:
I love using google products because they are usually user friendly. As teachers, this is very useful because we can save time spent trying to just figure out the tool instead of creating the the actual content.
On this task, we made a self marking quiz. A self-marking quiz helps is minimize the load of work that would come after students have taken the quiz. We don’t have to worry about going over tons of quizzes marking and giving feedback because we have done all that work prior when we created the quiz. The automated feedback and solutions also help students confirm their knowledge.

Challenges:
Creating the quiz takes a lot of time. It’s not the tool itself but all the work needed to get the content for the quiz. It also make a pretty basic quiz with not much room to later functionality or not many options to change designs.

Reflection:
It was interesting to see how I can create the online self marking quiz on forms. I don’t think this will form part of my teaching because it takes time to create the quiz and there are better tools for creating quizzes.
