How would you describe Medina's report? Is her representation of gentrification in Santa Ana positive or negative?

In Medina's report she states how Latino Marketplaces have been modernized to fit "American standards". Whereas 4th street was a place where Mexicans could be surrounded by their culture and feel at home, it has now been Americanized filled with: hamburger joints, clubs, tattoo shops, and no sense of culture. Medina's representation of Santa Ana is anti-gentrification, she speaks of how Americans want to "scrub away any suggestion that 4th Street was once populated with Mexican shops in a city that is 85% Latino". Overall, the city is not changing ethnically; it's changing socioeconomically, where 4th street use to be populated with Latinos in every corner, you now see whites and upper-class Americans in every shop and little to none Latinos, thus the process of gentrification has already been effective.

What aspect of gentrification in Santa Ana does Medina identify as being overlooked or "left unsaid"?

Medina says that the gentrification being left out of the picture in this case is how this is effecting Latinos. It's effecting them way more because they were there before this gentrification and now their shops are being replaced and put out of business, and that's what people don't see when they enjoy the new place they call Downtown Santa Ana.

Medina´s report was published in the New York Times. What do you think this says about the issue of gentrification in Santa Ana and the United States as a whole?

Since the New York times is a newspaper that people all over the world read it shows that the fact that they chose Santa Ana specifically shows that we have a big issue of gentrification here. This says that the issue of gentrification in Santa Ana but also the United States is becoming more of a problem because we are forgetting about the many different cultures that makes the United States a diverse country.

Summary

To begin with, this document is an example of anti-gentrification. This can be determined because the author states that many businesses regarding Latino and Hispanic culture and preferences are being put out of business. For example, while many new and hip shops are being introduced. For example, in the case of Ms. Madriles, her quincenera shop is being put out of business, and it is a daily struggle, with the businesses drying them up. Moreover, another example of cultural removal would be how they repainted to look not related to the ethnicity. However, the new business people defend themselves from these accusations by stating that the people employed and managing the new stores and businesses are Hispanic. To conclude, Santa Ana is being changed for the better of the economy, but detrimentally for ethnicity and cultural shops.
