In the poem "What's in the Sack," Shel Silverstein emphasizes the speaker's loss of self through the repetition of questions and exaggerated visuals that obscure the speaker's body. The speaker begins the poem by twice asking, "What's in the sack? What's in the sack?" By repeating this question, Silverstein establishes a tone of mockery, imitating the annoying way that curious onlookers bombard the speaker with inquiries about what he's carrying. In contrast, the speaker later laments, "Does anyone ask me, 'Hey, when is your birthday? Can you play Monopoly?'" revealing his longing to be asked more personal questions in order to be better understood by others. Silverstein also manipulates the scale of the sack that the speaker is shouldering, showing both the physical and metaphorical burden weighing on the speaker. The speaker becomes reduced to a mere head and legs, and the lack of visual separation between the sack and the speaker's head makes the sack appear to be a permanent part of his body. Both of these elements reinforce the notion that the speaker is losing himself to the sack and the superficial questions that accompany this burden. Silverstein's poem ultimately comments on the harmful nature of focusing only on the obvious qualities that someone possesses rather than who they are on the inside.
