The video begins with the little girl walking to school. Another girl laughs at her, which could also imply that she was bullied. While she is at school, the teacher and her classmates ignore the signs of child abuse (bruises on her body). One day, a young boy around her age becomes friends with her. One night, the girl and boy are talking to each other from their bedroom windows, and her mother catches her and beats her. After the beating, police officers and an ambulance are shown at her house. The lyrics state, "The neighbours hear, but they turn out the light." The audience can assume that the neighbours had heard the noise, but ignored it. At the funeral, Angela’s grave is surrounded by a group of people, including her school teacher and her only friend. "It is suggested the boy is the ghost of a young child who was killed from being abused and then comes to Angela just before her death to show her friendship" (Concrete Angel, 2018).
The music video ends when the boy passes through the adults, hugs the spirit of Angela and they both run to meet a group of other abused children as they run off together. (Concrete Angel, 2018)

Overall argument/message of "Concrete Angel"

This message of this song is very clear to the audience- child abuse is happening, and it's a huge problem. This song also shows how many times people witness the signs of children being abused, don't do anything about it, and fail to report it to the authorities. The song "Concrete Angel" encourages the audience to report any possible signs of child abuse, rather than just sitting back and not doing at all. The only way that Child Abuse can be stopped is by reporting even possible signs right away.

1st Aspect: The Role Teachers/Educators have in Preventing Abuse

As a child care provider/ teacher, you are the key person to prevent abuse and neglect. If you notice any signs of abuse, you must report it immediately to Child Protective Services. There are many different ways that educators can help protect the safety of all of the children within their care. Examples include by educating fellow teachers, co-workers, and peers about how abuse and neglect negatively affects children in their day-to-day lives. As a teacher, you can also listen carefully to children's fears, and be supportive in every discussion you have with each child within the classroom. On a daily basis, you can also tell the children in your school how important and valuable they are. (Child Protection, n.d.) This will give the child a sense of comfort and belonging. Educators can also volunteer at a local abuse prevention centre and parenting programs to gain more knowledge on the signs and symptoms to look for to detect abuse. (Preventing Child Abuse, n.d.).

2nd Aspect: The Role Parents/Families have in Preventing Abuse

"Child abuse unfortunately occurs in all divisions of our society, however the risk factors are greater in families where parents appear to be having economic, housing, or personal problems; are having difficulty controlling their anger or stress; Are dealing with physical or mental health issues; Are struggling with alcohol or drugs; Or are simply uninterested in the care, safety, and well-being of their child/ren." (Preventing Child Abuse, n.d.). Parents can seek help with these challenges, and this could reduce the likelihood that their children will be neglected and abused. Parents can also protect the children in their families from abuse and neglect by doing something daily to support their child/ren. Every single action that parents take can have a great result when it comes to the safety and happiness of their children. Parents can ask their children about their day, and be sure to listen attentively to what they have to say. Parents can also get involved in events at their child’s school and be involved with their education. Parents can also take a break when they get stress, and get help with not taking their frustrations out on their children if this is something that they struggle with. (Preventing Child Abuse, n.d.).

3rd Aspect: The Role of Community Members in Preventing Abuse

Community members can also do many things to help keep the children within their community safe, healthy, and happy. Community members can reach out to their neighbours, co-workers and members of their place of worship (church, mosque) daily with actions that can make a huge difference. Community members can mentor children or parents through local volunteer programs. Community members can praise a child when they have tried hard at something or have used good manners. Members of the community can also offer to babysit for a neighbor or friend that appears to be stressed out. Another way that community members can help keep children safe, and happy includes by planning a parenting or child abuse education program at the workplace, place of worship or other organization. Community members can also donate their time and money if they wish to local child abuse prevention organization. This can help the community immensely! (Preventing Child Abuse, n.d.).

Weaknesses of Concrete Angel by: Martina McBride

Some people might believe that the song/music video for Concrete Angel by Martina McBride displays only a negative message that no one cares about the victims of child abuse and that the victims of child abuse are certain to eventually die, or are likely to grow up to be abuser's themselves. Another weakness of the music video for this song by Martina McBride is that it doesn't identify why the mother is abusing her daughter, which could give the audience the impression that some parents are simply just bad parents. I think that this music video would be more clear by perhaps showing why the mother is abusing her daughter. Was the mother abused herself as a child? Does she struggle with mental health issues, or drug and alcohol abuse? These are questions that are left unanswered after watching the music video for Concrete Angel.

Overall, Concrete Angel by Martina McBride is an effective protest against Child Abuse. Martina McBride focuses the audience's attention on child abuse, and the tragic fate that victims of child abuse could face if no one comes to their aid. At the end of the music video, the phone number for the Child Abuse Help Hotline is listed to help raise awareness for child abuse, and encourage others who suspect or are abused to reach out for help. The song helps the audience realize just how sad, horrifying, and fatal the effects of child abuse can be. Martina McBride has brought a lot of attention to abuse, and in fact no one else in country music has brought more attention to this issue. Even though the song does not have a happy ending, the legacy certainly does. Rob Crosby, who is the co-writer of the song, told Rolling Stone Magazine, “I've certainly had a lot of people tell me when I'm performing at shows what the song means to them. The fact that a few kids have seen the music video, which flashes the number for Child Help USA, and have been able to escape a bad situation is a gratifying thing.” (Kreps, D., et al. 2014). If you suspect that a child is being abused, your initial reaction may be to let it go or try to prove it's not true. However, it's vital that you report your concerns right away if you feel a child is in danger! By not reporting your concerns it could mean that the abuse will continue, and even possibly become fatal.
