The New Colossus

      by Emma Lazarus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

1.

Statue of Liberty ]
공식 이름은 Liberty Enlightening the World(세계를 밝히는 자유).

The poem is a Petrarchan sonnet.

The title of the poem and the first two lines refer to the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, sometimes described as standing astride the harbor; contrasted with the "New" Colossus (the Statue of Liberty, described in the poem).

The "sea-washed, sunset gates" are the mouths of the Hudson and East Rivers, to the west of Brooklyn. The "imprisoned lightning" refers to the electric light in the torch, then a novelty.

The "air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame" refers to New York Harbor between New York City and Brooklyn, which were separate cities at the time the poem was written, before being consolidated as boroughs of the City of Greater New York in 1898.

The "huddled masses" are the many immigrants coming to the United States (many of them - in the early 1900s - through Ellis Island at the port of New York).

The "golden door" has a double meaning - of the literal entryway immigrants to America passed through (the Communipaw Terminal on Ellis Island), as well as metaphorical doors of opportunity and prosperity for those suffering oppression and poverty (the 'huddled masses').

접속사Within the arena of household consumption, research predominantly focuses on direct rebound effects among consumers particularly for energy appliances in the home and fuel efficiency in vehicles. [ ] often large energy savings are predicted when consumers replace traditional incandescent light bulbs with more efficient compact fluorescent bulbs. [ ], these savings rarely reach their predicted targets as research indicates that many consumers, recognising that the light costs less to operate, appear less thorough about switching it off, resulting in more hours of use, i.e. higher energy consumption. [ ] studies have indicated that energy savings from efficiency improvements, for example, a more efficient space heating unit or increased levels of insulation, are often then spent on increased heating standards. Here, the consumer may gain by operating a warmer home for the same or lower cost than they had previously.

Over the millennia, owls evolved tubular eyes, which face forward and are 1) immovable, and are the reason owls developed the ability to turn their heads 270 degrees. Owl eyes have ore black-and-white detecting rods than color cones, 2) allowing them to see in the dark. Their large round yellow eyes, with dark pupils wide enough to let in small amounts of light in darkness, are one of the first things we notice about them. In the human world, large eyes with wide pupils hold a certain 3) distraction both for the viewer and the viewed. Studies show that a person’s pupils dilate in the presence of someone they are 4) attracted to. Advertisers dilate the eyes of models in photographs to make their products more attractive by default. Nature, it seems, has prepared us 5) biologically to be attracted to owls by giving them such big eyes.
