Students will listen to a chapter in the Winds and Willow. After listening to the read-aloud, they are asked 5-6 questions, recalling what happened in the story's plot. The teacher is assessing the responses. Other than that, there is no formal assessment of this lesson.

I plan on changing this lesson to a partner activity where they sequence the plot pictures. I am using picture sequences so my low English speakers have a role in participation. After the sequence, I will have them describe the main character, Toad, in each part of the story. They will then ask three questions about the story by writing them on sticky notes.

As an exit ticket, students will choose one sticky note to answer (written by another student). I will evaluate their ability to ask a question and answer a question. This will be done using the rubric the student teacher created at the beginning of the year. This rubric outlines how to ask a good question and answer a question in a complete sentence.

The most beneficial learning I have experienced this week is being able to use my current reading slides and increase the rigor of questions. I have also enjoyed thinking about how to take boring questions that have taken engagement away from my lessons into high-level thinking tasks. I look forward to continuing this practice in all my slides this next school year.

As I learn new ways to improve my instruction, I worry about my ability to do it all this coming year. I need to take time to focus on what is most important. I can see that student talk is a newer concept for me to consider within lessons. I know that this will have to be one that I improve over a few years. I know that it will be essential for me to reevaluate my improvements at the end of the year to know what the next step is.
