Their latest album Magma, released in 2016 on Roadrunner, has taken the band to new heights. Magma was nominated for Best Rock Album at the 2016 Grammy's and the second single "Silvera" was nominated for Best Metal Performance. Gojira is one of my favorite metal bands and I have seen them perform live with Slayer and Mastodon. They have also toured with Metallica and are a staple act at giant European Festivals. It is interesting to see such a heavy band receive the attention they are getting. The band consists of brothers Joe Duplantier (lead vocals, guitar) and Mario Duplantier (drums),  and Christian Andreu (guitar) and Jean-Michel Labadie (bass). The name Gojira comes from the original Japanese pronunciation of Godzilla. Gojira is influenced by Metallica, Death, Morbid Angel, Pantera, The Beatles, Sepultura, and many more bands. After releasing several demos in the late 90s under the name Godzilla, the band changed their name to Gojira and released their debut album Terra Incognita in 2001. The Link followed in 2003. In 2005, Gojira released their masterpiece album From Mars to Sirius. It is number 97 on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time. The concept album deals with several environmental issues including global warming and whaling as well as death and rebirth on both a planetary and human level. The Way of All Flesh was released in 2008 on Listenable Records like the first three albums. In 2012, Gojira released L'Enfant Sauvage on Roadrunner Records. It means "The Wild Child" in French and is a concept album based on the legendary French film of the same name. Magma is Gojira's latest album from 2016 on Roadrunner Records. This album marked the band going into a different musical direction away from their death metal roots while still featuring insanely heavy music and progressive songwriting. The album deals with the death of Joe and Mario Duplantier's mother from cancer. It also focuses on life, death, and the darkness and beauty of humanity overall like their previous work. Joe also owns his own studio in New York City called The Silver Cord where the band has been recording for the last few years.
