Tolkien found a great deal inspiration for his novel in the dichotomy of where he grew up. With the rolling green hills and kindly people The community of the shire mirrors what is thought of as a stereotypical English rural community. At the same time he saw the bleak baron and smog ridden industrial centers that were dotted around Britain. This idealization of a life close to nature is a large part of the story's universe.

Most of the creatures and humanoid beings in the story are based mythical creatures from Scandinavian and English folklore. The creatures are modified heavily and in the case of the humanoid ones, are used to represent aspects of our culture.
