With the rolling green hills and kindly people The community of the shire mirrors what is thought of as a stereotypical English rural community. At the same time he saw the bleak baron and smog ridden industrial centers that were dotted around Britain. This idealization of a life close to nature is a large part of the story's universe. 

Most of the creatures and humanoid beings in the story are based mythical creatures from Scandinavian and English folklore.
