The next most important part of the writing process is the freewriting process.  Writing is choosing part of the stream of consciousness that goes through the human mind and putting it on paper or a screen.  Freewriting is the more organic form of that and there is choice involved:  getting to write about a chosen topic and choosing which part of the mind to write about.

Students need interaction around their writing.  They also need models of writing and teacher who is willing to be a model of the process.

The writing process has multiple steps and it looks different for different people. When I write, I like to revise along the way. I reread what I've written multiple times as I'm writing. I know for others, they like to get all of their thoughts down before going back and rereading what they've written. editing, revision - when another person reads the piece, its essentially you opening yourself up. Will your thoughts persuade the reader to think like you or will your thoughts be contradicted?

writing with your audience in mind. I always envision my audience and attempt to change my perspective - how would I react to my writing?
