Professional Take Away from Resources

My biggest take away from the resources is that the risk and impact of school counselor burnout and fatigue is so notable that governing agencies, like the American School Counselor Association, deem self-care, as a preventative measure, to be a necessary component of their ethical standards. I also found it shocking that up to 66% of school counselors experience feelings of burnout and emotional exhaustion at some point during their counseling career.

Importance of Self-Care in the Helping Profession

Self-care is vital for those in the working profession because feelings of burnout can inhibit a helping professional's ability to do their job and help others. Helping professionals can sometimes take on the stresses of those they are helping. Combining the stresses of others with your own stress, without effective self-care, will surely decrease a person's ability to effectively help and increase their feelings of fatigue and burnout, with the potential to cause them to eventually leave the profession.

In order to ensure I am taking care of myself, I set strict work/life boundaries and make sure I make time to do the things I enjoy. In my current role, I schedule my days so that I take care of specific responsibilities during specific parts of the day, and prioritize tasks based on urgency and importance. By doing this, I make sure that I make it home at a decent time every day and have my weekends free of work to spend time with friends and family, doing things I enjoy.

This is a graphic of a typical week for me. I try to really stick to the schedule I have laid out, though some weeks different responsibilities are more demanding. My priority is to get everything done in a timely manner to be able to relax and enjoy my weekday evenings and weekends.
