HIDDEN LIFE- Catherine used to live with the Armstrongs but eventually moved in with the Callahans. The Callahans didn't practice Christianity which they forced Catherine not to spread around the household. Catherine did not let this stop her, she used every day items or corners to reference Holy items and worship the Lord. Catherine associated with many Priests to assist her with helping others. Catherine had experienced all these unfortunate situations and she wanted to help anyone who was struggling like she used to too.
HEIRESS- However, William Callahan did admire Catherine's kind hard. He practiced Christianity as well. He donated ten percent of his income to Catherine's charity. When Mr. Callahan passed, he left all his assets to Catherine. She became his heiress.
BUILDER- After unsettling times when she could not provide help to those who asked, she decided to build a refuge for distressed women with good character. She would use the money from the inheritance she received. Catherine opened up her resultant House of Mercy on September 23, 1827. The House of Mercy would be used to provide employment and education for women.
LAY APOSTLE- Catherine and her Sisters of Mercy would visit patients who fell ill. When the cholera disease began to fall upon the city, they lent helping hand to the doctors to everyone who had contracted the disease. After news had spread about their voluntary action in the hospital they were sent to different hospitals to help also.
MODERN EXECUTIVE- Catherine continued her works of mercy but went to live with her sister due to her terminal illness. Because she moved in she was under constant criticism on using her money on the poor. She would read the bible and enlighten her nieces and nephews on the word of the Lord. When Mary passed, her nieces and nephews chose to stay with Catherine. Many who were close to her, began to want to help her in assisting others.

FOUNDRESS
the works of mercy began to increase more and more, Catherine's project became a storm center of criticism. Some of the faithful felt the House of Mercy rivaled works of the Sisters of Charity and would drain financial support from them. Some clerics took offense that lay women were doing freely and under self direction what the daughters of Mary Aikenhead were doing within the structures of the Church. She feel this new attack that in 1829 when the House of Mercy Chapel opened as a public oratory, she did not attend the opening Mass but prayed quietly alone. further more, one priest inform Catherine that the Archbishop wanted the House of Mercy handed over immediately to the Sisters of Charity and It was difficult for Catherine to do such an sacrifice she asked for. She had committed her entire fortune to works crying out to be done, had her own plans for development of capable young women of enlightened faith and for the provision of a good education for the neglected children of Dublin's poor. Catherine wrote to Archbishop Murray offering the House of Mercy to him and This may have been the moment which gave birth to the Sisters of Mercy. On September 8, 1830 for the Presentation Convent at George's Hill, Dublin, Catherine McAuley, Mary Ann Doyle, and Elizabeth Harley set out to be schooled in religious communal life.

Summary (Land of Sorrows, Land of Promise, Obligations of Wealth, Pain of Loss, Catholic-Protestant Tension)

Land of Sorrows: Ireland in the 18th-19th century was a land made miserable. Almost everyone was horrendously poor and/or horrendously sick. Catholics especially had it worst due to rebellion of the penal code. Everything was bad until the repeal of the penal laws in 1798 which gave an opportunity of justice for gifted people to rebuild the nation when Catherine was 20.
Land of Promise: Although it may seem like Ireland was all poor, there are still rich in the area. Even though there were still hardships and handicaps they still managed to pull through and make a good living out of it. One of the people who made that living was James McAuley, Catherine's dad. He was a carpenter, builder, and most importantly a Gent.
Obligations of Wealth: Before though, Catherine was born into a family which was wealthy but that didn't stop the sparked dedication in Catherine's eyes to save the poor people. She studied the mannerisms of the people in the house especially her father. That was only the beginning of her story of how she came to be.
Pain of Loss: Her dad and mom were sadly deceased, but not in vain as Catherine learned a lot from them. Their death was very untimely as Catherine was very young at both deaths. These events weren't all that bad since the experience of it made the Sisters of Mercy.
Catholic-Protestant Tension: Since both of Catherine's parents died, she had to go live with the Armstrongs (Her mother's cousins) She herself had experienced hunger, cold, ridicule, scorn; she had experienced being homeless, being dependent on the will of those who provided for her and she wouldn't let that happen anymore.

The person's that she was with she had a lot of love for them because she had the time and she had patience to deal with them. When Catherine share her spiritual teaching she involved three themes: trust in the Father's providence; identification with Jesus in His mission; and everlasting gratitude for the Mercy of God; and she encourage other people to share her words all over the world. Their hearts were breaking. They wanted her suffering to end, yet they want to let her go. For each one, mother Catherine had a little word of comfort, the sisters sit quietly praying Mother's favorite prayers which she joined in with for as long as she could. Catherine would say ask, and you will receives. The one who knocks, enters , in other words she was telling her people to follow God and they will be blessed.

Sister Catherine became a familiar face in the back and streets of the villages visiting the sick and dying and brining food as well as words of kindness to the hungry. They were more than generous and gave her the freedom to share their good fortune with the needy. Having experienced poverty first hand, Catherine was able to guide others in compassionately responding to those in need.

Catherine had two different major superiors which each one treated her in a different attitude. One of them treated her as an older, mature woman, giving her the specific training required for a major religious superior. The other one felt that Catherine should experience what every novice experiences and was to exercise her humility, patience, and charity. Sister Catherine, who had served many novitiates during her lifetime, met each test with that refinement of soul which only those possess who yield entirely to God. For Catherine, the novitiate was a time of recollection, interior quiet, and deep prayer and she acknowledged a deeper realization of who had been calling her, moving her and giving her rich blessings. Once again, she was doing her best, putting her resources whole heartedly into the disposal of God. nevertheless, she was trouble by reports of sickness in Baggot street and During her absence more than a few of the little band had injured their health in long fasts, prolonged prayers, and all night vigils added on to long hours of work.

December 12, 1831 a ceremony was held at Presentation Convent, George's Hill, Dublin, that marks the official beginning of the Sisters of Mercy. Not too long, during Catherine's absence, two sisters were buried in the vaults of Catherine's father in Caldron street and Sister Elizabeth Harley was soon to follow them. Archbishop Murray appointed Catherine first Superior of the Sisters of Mercy and confirmed her in the name of the Church. Catherine did not like a title of distinction nor having any difference to exist between choir and lay sister. Catherine was always there willing to honor the sensibilities of others and wanted an approval form Archbishop Murray on their efforts. On March 24, 1835 they were granted an approval from Archbishop Murray and The Rule was confirmed in an short time on June 6, 1841. The success of the venture from Baggot Street brought petitions from all areas of Ireland as well as England to found Convents of the Sisters of Mercy. Catherine started Negotiating new foundations, and attempted to connect well-disposed wealthy Catholics with the needs of the poor in their areas. Her concern was that those who performed these works have space and time with God and each other to develop and renew those virtues. She believed God-given blessings were intended to bless the less fortunate. Sister Catherine believed God- given blessing were intended to bless the less fortune and she encouraged others to the same view.

Catherine utilized all modes of transportation as she embarked on her foundation travels. She was negotiating foundations for Liverpool and Newfoundland during the weakness of her last illness. Her own rich experiences permitted her to be an evangelist in Charlesville. The first English novices sent over to Ireland to be prepared to make a foundation in the Bermondsey. Catherine took the sister of mercy on a tour of the other foundations in Ireland to learn the different works and the different ways they were being carried out. The Foundress from Baggot Street had the liberty of spirit not to like the Convent designed by the famous architect, Pugin. Architect also for the second Convent of Mercy in Birmingham, England, who brought the windows to eye level and provided more places for light to enter, accommodated some of Catherine's complaints.
