This piece is outside my immediate cultural milieu because it was released in 1984 about the Vietnam War. Though the war did not directly affect me or any of my close family members it is easy to imagine what these soldiers were going through once they returned from war back to a country that couldn't take good care of them. This is something that still happens to our veterans today who return from the army and are left without jobs or sufficient funds to survive. It is very clear that this song was written with some frustration for how this country works and how it treats some people and this is most evident through Springsteen's ironic repeating of "Born in the U.S.A". This song was meant to make the audience think about how they had been treating soldiers who came back home only to find so many people against them because they fought in the war. I assume that many listeners initially thought that it was a patriotic song when in reality it is quite anti-america. This makes me see how blind some people were to the problems that were surrounding them until someone with a large following said something about it. That is very similar to now though since there are so many people who avoid the real problems until a celebrity brings light to the situation which is a very effective way for them to use their platform.

Whenever I listen to this song I feel pretty upset about how the situation was back then and still kind of is. To me the song isn't something I can rock out to or sing without thinking about the meaning behind it. I feel like and outsider because I was not the one who was committing any acts of hate or turning my back on the veterans but I also feel responsible to not let it happen again in my lifetime. Personally I can see how these people felt this way because it is something a lot of people struggle with today. Some people feel like soldiers do not deserve to be praised while others do and I can understand the view of both sides. But i really don't understand how people could treat others in such a way and then just turn their backs on them.

I once heard someone mention that the reason the album art was of his butt was because it was a way of saying "America can kiss my a**". I'm not sure how true that is but it would make sense in regards to Born in the U.S.A.

In this video you can really see the passion that Springsteen puts into the song and how the crowd interacts with him. It also makes me wonder how many people screamed with pride during the chorus instead of knowing what they were really screaming for.
