Redlining is the outdated, now-illegal, racist practice of focusing people of a certain group/ethnicity within a certain neighborhood, which was more likely to be targeted by factories and the like. Basically, minorities were located in areas that were more susceptible to environmental issues.
Districts that were redlined previously continue to suffer from the aftermath of this problem. They are, on average, hotter, more polluted, and more crowded than other districts, among other problems.

I knew nothing of Globeville since I was not born in Colorado; not even a mention of it by any of my family members or friends (given that I came to Colorado in 2015, and only became...somewhat actively involved within my community after 2017). I have not been to or driven through Globeville before, at least knowingly, so the only impressions I have of it are what was shown in the articles, which make it out to be a toxic place to live in that is trying its hardest to go back to a healthy state of community. The only thing I am reminded of is my home country of Venezuela, whose environmental health has been on decline for the past few decades, and continues to go down as the government keeps ignoring the issues at hand (due to their corruption, but I will not get into that topic within this post).

The problems described in the articles are definitely engineering problems. The projects and factories established within Globeville, as well as the little regulation these had led to the area being labeled as 'dangerous'. Had the engineering of it all been managed more properly, with some regards to ethics along the way, it would not have become as much of a catastrophe as it did.

I believe that all engineers, or for that matter, all people who are members of society, play a role in fixing the issues pertaining to environmental justice and racism. However, engineers, in particular, play a bigger role since they have (theoretically) more power in their hands to do something about these issues than the commonfolk since they can design prototypes to try and solve the problems at hand or bring it up to higher authorities and actually be listened to.
Mines graduates should first acknowledge that these issues are real and that they need to be addressed. The most proactive approach would be to join a company or organization that specializes in solving these issues that need someone 'technical' for the prototypes and things like that. The less active approach is to participate in online research about how to solve these issues, share as much information to the public (i.e. friends and family) as one can, and, if possible, contribute in one way or another in the production of a solution (or solutions) to these problems.
