Why I Chose Frida Kahlo

I no longer want to be a teacher, but if I did I would choose to teach art. I chose Frida Kahlo because she is one of the few famous female artists of her time, and embodied feminism and produced incredible artwork. In the classroom, influential females in history are often not given the credit they deserve. I think it is important for students to learn about women in history, especially ones who have shaped today’s art.

Frida Kahlo is one of Mexico’s most well known artists. In her artwork, she tackled issues such as gender, relationships, race, class, and culture. Kahlo often represented the issues in a surreal yet realistic way. The main inspiration for her paintings, was Mexican folk-style painting.

Her work was progressive for it’s time. Not many artists, or people in general, discussed gender equality. However, Kahlo is known for depicting the female experience, making her a feminist icon.

She was also involved in politics. She joined the Mexican Communist Party, where she met her husband and fellow artist, Diego Riviera.
