Date: Thursday 14-1-21.
This week we had to prepare a meal for our families, I made a roast veg dinner for my Mom and I.

I started by peeling and chopping the vegetables and steaming them for a few minutes. I put thr ivem on to heat at a medium heat. In the mean time I prepared the stuffing balls and chopped an onion. Once it was steamed enough I drained all the vegetables and oiled my tray. I put the vegetables on the tray and added herbs and seasonings. I put everything in the oven until it was all cooked to out taste which took around fourty minutes. I did a few dishes as it was cooking and the rest after it was done. I made gravy and served up the food.

My mother really enjoyed it and I will add an audio clip of her thoughts when she’s free to record it.

date: 18-1-21
Megan Brown

Theory - Finland doesn’t exist.

Explain the theory-

Some people believe Finland simply does not exist. The idea started circling around on reddit a few years back. Those who find truth in it believe that people who claim to be from Finland are really from either western Russia, eastern Sweden or northern Estonia and are just led to believe they are in Finland. They believe there is just water where we are told Finland is.

The story goes that Russia and Japan made the country up in the year 1918. According to Vice “ the notion goes that the two nations created Finland so that Japan could fish the sea that exists there without environmental complaints or repercussions” and then the caught fish would be shipped via the Trans- Siberian railway from the eastern Russian coast to Japan under the disguise of Nokia products.

And of course you’re probably thinking, what about other countries and scientists? Would they not notice that it isn’t there, well The belief is that they decided it’s best to keep the secret and keep Finland as an example of a better world, as Finland is known for being a very successful and equal country.

What evidence is there?

The non-Finland-believers believe Finland is just too good to be true. The theory says “no real country could be so consistently placed first in education, healthcare, gender equality, literacy rates, national stability, the least corrupt government in the world, freedom of the press”. It just shows our lack of faith in our own species that it is hard to believe we can be decent to each other and organise ourselves well.

Finland is also not a very popular tourist destination so there is not all that many people who can say for a fact they have been there and it exists. And it doesn't have a terribly large population although many people claiming to be from finland took great offence at the notion that it wasn't real. But hey they could be paid actors for all I know.

Date: 28-1-21
For this task I chose to listen to “Let’s Talk About Myths Baby, a Greek and Roman mythology podcast”. I chose this one as I Really love Greek and Roman mythology and any other mythology’s really. I’ve wanted to Listen to this for a while so I thought I’d use this task to listen to it.

The episodes are generally between 20 and 30 minutes so I listened to two episodes.

The first episode I listened to was “Eatin’ Kids and Killin’ Dads, an Introduction to Greek Mythology”.

Did I enjoy it: Yes, I really enjoyed this episode. I thought it was very interesting and entertaining. I thought the host, Liv was very chill and easy to listen to. It was informative but not super heavy and hard to follow.

What did I learn: I had a decent bit of knowledge on this story before but it really filled in some of the gaps for me. I think for a first episode it’s good in that way that its partially well known but it kind of fills in the gaps for you.

Then the second episode I listened to was “Perseus and the Crazy Things That Happen When You Behead A Gorgon”

Did I enjoy it: Yea I think this one was my favourite of the two. I think this one was more story-like and the characters were pretty easy to remember their names and to keep track of.

What did I learn : I learned about the story of the Demi-god Perseus (yes the namesake of Percy Jackson from the book series ,and the movie series but we don’t talk about that), son of Zeus, how he came to be and the journey he went on and why he went on it to behead the infamous Medusa. I also learned that this is one of the very few Greek myths that has a happy ending.

Would I recommend this to a friend: I definitely would recommend this podcast to my friends, it’s educational in a way but really it’s just anschient fiction so I don’t think you would be bored. I would give it five stars for me personally as it ticks all the boxes of what I like in a podcast, interesting, witty, relaxed and easy to follow.

Another podcast I would recommend is “Stuff You Missed in History Class” by iheartradio

Reminds me of something they would put on at a wedding that would make everyone stop dancing and sit down (not a good thing). I'm sure it's a solid song just not really my thing.
Rating out of 10: 7 out of 10.
Why?: I gave it 7 out of ten as I think its a solid album overall. Not all to my taste but I can appreciate that it is grand. The songs are catchy and easy to listen to which aligns with the genre.

My fathers sides surname was changed very few generations ago as my great grandfather had to change it to an English surname when he moved to Belfast.

The surname "Wymbs" was originally found in Fife in Scotland, where they held a family seat from very ancient times as Lords of the castle of "Wemyss", named from the Gaelic word "Uamch" which means "Cave". It was derived from the lands and cliffs in which caves are found on the seashore. Some of the Wymbs family moved to Ireland Others migrated to the united states.

Climate action

Date 25-1-21
Thus is a project i did for my GCE class.
Introduction:

For my climate action project i interviewed a resident in Oznam house where my mother works. I asked him questions relating to weather, food and transport and how they have changed since he was young, to see how the climate has been affected and to see what changes in food and transport there have been that are a huge contributing factor to climate change .

Weather:

I started by asking him how the weather in general has changed. He explained that it was a lot wetter but definitely not as cold as it was when he was young. I then asked how the seasons seem to have changed and he said “ Summers were an awful lot drier then, winters now are much warmer “.

Food:

I then got onto the topic of food and started by asking him if he feels he ate very differently in his youth. He said that they mainly ate seasonal and home grown foods or local produce. He then went on to say that his family grew lots of vegetables such as lettuce, carrots and for christmas they grew sprouts. Nowadays most food is bought from chain super markets but then, they bought from local shops. Little to no imports, oranges were a christmas treat.

Transport:

Finally we spoke about transport. He explained that now almost everyone has a car or access to a car whenever they want and people use planes and trains way more often. He might have gotten to go on the train on very special occasions as a boy. Roads are much busier and that means a lot more harmful gasses put out into our atmosphere. He said that the train that used to be in bundoran is badly missed. The bus routes around bundoran aren't great as it's hard to get to certain places nearby. I think a train system again in bundoran would be much better for the environment as there would be less need for people to drive everywhere. Back when he was a child only business people had cars.

How can we improve things?

In my opinion we need much better public transport systems in place in bundoran and the surrounding areas. Less cars on the road means less emissions which would have a positive effect on the environment .

Another solution would be to buy locally more often and only buy what is seasonally available.

And finally i think growing more of our own food would be helpful.

Hi there, my name is megan brown and this is My TY portfolio 2020-21.

Overall it’s been a strange year but enjoyable nonetheless. We didn’t get to do lots of the normal ty things but we still got to do as much things as possible And I got one had a great time!

A few of my favourites were the bonding trip with the surf school at the beginning of the year, getting to see the reptiles from reptile haven and working on our mural. out of all the activities, I loved the cliff jumping from the bonding trip the most and it was also great getting closer with different people in my year who I normally wouldn’t talk to that often . I love reptiles and it was very cool to get to see so many in person and to learn more about them, I find things like that very interesting. And finally I really liked working on a mural with some of my friends as I like creative things and I really enjoyed learning more about using paints and developing my creative skills.

At the start of ty I was very shy and found talking to people my age hard, I feel like ty had helped me come out of my shell a lot and I have much more confidence.

I really appreciated the opportunity to get to try out lots of subjects that i have not done before. i really loved robotics with mr warren and Chinese with ms Patton. I really love trying new things and trying out lots of new subjects felt like a dream come true to me.

I felt I had lots of time in the evenings to work on personal skills that I wouldn’t have during an exam year. I improved my knitting and crochet skills and I learned to sew using a machine. I also got to read lots again and bring my love for reading back to life.

Ty gave me so much more than I could ever have expected and I would definitely recommend it to anyone. It’s an amazing opportunity even during covid times. I’m only sad it’s almost over.
