I started to think about how to get assistance from AI(chat GPT) to prepare materials for our curriculum. In week 3, we need to practice taking notes on a video of a student presentation. I have questions that a teacher has prepared in previous years. There are question types such as finding out the main ideas, true-false type questions, multiple choice, and open-ended questions. First, I used AI-powered transcription tools such as Happyscribe and Transkriptor to get the transcript of the audio files. They are not free so I had to use the trials of a couple of programs to get the whole transcript. Now, I'm planning to use ChatGPT to create a different set of questions for the presentation. I will check and edit the questions before we practice them in the classroom. I might either do the older version in some sections or the new version in some others and compare the results. I didn't make the decision yet.

I was able to complete two different materials so far. First I started working on a reading task. We assign two academic articles for the students to read, analyse, and practice paraphrasing skills. I wanted to prepare questions about how to find the main ideas and some multiple-choice questions for the details so that they can understand what the text is about. They will work on the theme of the articles throughout the semester and they will write a final essay about this theme. Therefore, they need to understand the topic and get familiar with it. I prepared comprehension check questions and I am planning to prepare plagiarism exercises using some parts of the text to paraphrase and summarize. I read some website articles and researched practical prompts to create comprehension check questions for language teaching. I found some useful prompts that can guide me. I am at a beginner level at using AI so I felt a little anxious at first. I had to check many documents and compile a list of prompts. I also read some recommendations about what and what not to do. I often use "act as if" as a prompt and try to give as many details as possible such as the level of the students, how old they are, the number of questions and question types. According to the articles I read, you had better tell ChatGPT what to do rather than what not to do. You also need to be specific and regenerate your prompts until you get the results you want. Also, I post examples, next to my prompts and it works well. I feel frustrated when I cannot get the results I want but I try to add more details and more instructional prompts. I was able to achieve most of my goals so far. There are some caveats I want to share: You shouldn't trust the Chatgpt entirely and make your own edits to the questions. You cannot generate the best questions at once but you can select the ones you like by generating them a couple of times. Your prompts should be clear but not very long. So you had better add more prompts later or edit them. I think it creates some kind of confusion. For reading tasks, it is easier to generate questions for specific tasks such as finding out the main ideas, asking for details and critical thinking. However, for the listening tasks, it is much more challenging as you need to generate questions for each task separately using specific parts of the transcript. So you need to train Chatgpt to take action as a human teacher to create questions and answers. You also need to check the answer options. A human teacher would try to make the wrong answers as relevant as possible so you need to be selective. My recommendation would be to generate as many questions as possible and be selective. You can also edit them by hand. Finally, Chatgpt works well as an assistant; it shuffles the options(numerous prompts are needed for the best result-or something is wrong with me:)), it generates an answer booklet, highlights the answers in the text, generates questions appropriate to the level and it is especially good at logic and critical thinking. I was very impressed by the scenario it created for the listening task.

About the prompts and the materials

I do not like how Chatgpt paraphrases as it doesn't change the sentence structure or keeps the same words even if I add the prompts. The problem is when my instructions are long, it doesn't understand so I need to write additional instructions such as "start the paraphrase with the second sentence or "use therefore instead of because". I'm teaching repeat students so I asked Chatgpt to rewrite at the pre-intermediate level and I liked the final results for the best or good paraphrases. I created a material with the paraphrases generated by Chatgpt and obviously, there are plagiarism mistakes in them. Final thoughts: Chatgpt is super helpful for creating several materials in a shorter time. I can do anything Chatgpt can do but I can focus on one or two materials at most as I don't have enough time while teaching. I still needed to spend a lot of time editing the materials so the use of AI for EAP courses can not be about copying and pasting as our courses focus on higher-order thinking skills. and the teachers need to think deeply to create efficient materials.

The listening activity, which was mostly generated by AI, worked well, I guess. The objectives were to take notes on a video of a student presentation and to identify and use reporting verbs to refer to points in a presentation. They were able to take notes and find out the main ideas and the details. Also, they wrote a paragraph referring to their notes and responded to the ideas of the presenter using reporting verbs. Overall, I think AI is super beneficial for preparing questions, focusing on the details, and encouraging students to think critically. I might use the help of AI for the critical thinking part of the lessons in the future, as it generates some good ideas and gives good recommendations. Yet, I must admit I had to spend a lot of time on it to achieve the results I wanted, and I edited the documents a lot. The wrong answers to the multiple-choice questions were not difficult enough, but I achieved my objective so that was not an issue. The recording was fast and difficult for them in terms of level. I had to pause a lot so that they could understand the content. I am also attaching the answers of some students to the critical thinking question.

Overall, the exercises were helpful for the students to study both for the midterm and the theme of the semester. Without ChatGPT (I call her Lex now), I wouldn't be able to prepare these materials as I wouldn't have time while teaching. Some students missed the hours focusing on summarizing, so these students were able to practice summarizing one more time by detecting the plagiarism mistakes. I also shared most of my materials with some of my colleagues and received feedback. I feel that this process has been effective and collaborative so far.

This listening exercise was definitely better than the previous one. Lex has learned from her mistakes, and so have I. I was able to create a material in a few hours in week 4. I mainly focused on multiple-choice questions, and I gave examples so that Lex can model the question type and produce/generate similar results. I made the level of the questions much more difficult with more detailed, longer correct/incorrect options. Lex shuffled the options without a prompt. Final thoughts: AI can learn and improve through more instructions and give better results. Modelling and giving examples for AI is one of the best ways to get the results you want. AI doesn't repeat the mistakes it did previously if you correct them (not 100% sure). I feel like Lex is a helpful assistant to create materials for my classes. Without her/it, I wouldn't be able to produce these materials. I also shared the listening practice materials with some of my colleagues.

I used this to get an idea about the perspectives that can be used regarding the presentation topics. I didn't share this with my students, but I discussed this and asked for their opinions in general. This was time-saving and helpful for me.

I asked Lex to do brainstorming for the group discussion topic and the 2nd presentation topics. The students need to agree, disagree, or partially agree with the statement, and they need to refer to the texts they used for evidence to support their opinion. Chatgpt can effectively aid in brainstorming and critical thinking. It is really time-saving, as I am only using it to guide the students and help them understand the topics. They already know that they can use chatgpt to prepare a presentation, but the sources are not reliable most of the time, and even if they use AI, they cannot get very good grades as they are not learning or grasping the content fully. We assess the performance rather than the slides or the script. Unless they are not prepared, they cannot explain the content successfully.

I created materials about the essay structure with the assistance of Lex. I asked my AI friend to make some evaluations based on the sources I submitted, and it did it. I left out some necessary info and wrote an argumentative essay for the students to make some corrections, such as adding APA citations, writing a topic sentence etc. It took me an hour and I love it:)

I created materials for my 1102 classes about how to detect plagiarism mistakes, and I got help with brainstorming for 1st assessed presentation in 1101. It is time-saving and effective in terms of content. I still need to edit my materials a lot as I use the unpaid version. Lex cannot paraphrase well without being trained, yet collaboration with her shortens the amount of time I spend to create an activity or exercise.
