Marley and Scrooge were close friends. No one tended to speak to Scrooge, because of his lack of care and kindness towards his community. Lastly, Marley had died for at least 7 years.

Marley was Scrooge's friend as well as his business partner. At the start of the chapter we read that Marley dies. The reaction Scrooge had was very coldhearted. We also get to understand how grumpy Scrooge is when his nephew come's into his office and try's to make Scrooge happy at Christmas for once, but if anything all Scrooge's nephew did was make Scrooge even more unhappy about Christmas. Furthermore, Scrooge would never donate to the poor because he believed it was a waist of money. Another reason is all he cared about was himself. Last of all, when ever Scrooge would go out in the streets nobody would ever care to talk to Scrooge because he was soo mean to everyone. Even the dogs led their owners away from Scrooge.

Marley was said to be 'as dead as a doorbell', and he was a close friend and business partner of Scrooge. Scrooge was a heartless man, and a very negative man. Scrooge was a 'tight-fisted hand at the grindstone. A squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous sinner!' However, the one person he did pay respect to was his business partner, Marley. This was proven when the narrator says that Scrooge never painted out Old Marley’s name. And if someone called it Scrooge Scrooge or just Marley. Nobody ever stopped him in the street to say, with gladsome looks, “My dear Scrooge, how are you? When will you come to see me?” No beggars implored him to bestow a trifle, no children asked him what it was o’clock."

When Marley appeared in Scrooge's home, even then, Scrooge displayed no care towards the ghost. He continued to treat him poorly. Marley's ghost appeared to Scrooge surrounded by images representing the life he shared with scrooge. EG, cash box ledger and a deed.

Marley was known as Scrooge's business partner and he was a very hard worker. He would work everyday for long hours and take care of all the customers. Yet Scrooge didn't have that much respect for him. As this chapter begins, it states that Marley is dead. A few years later, Marley comes to Scrooge's house as a ghost. As she comes in, Scrooge still doesn't have the respect she required. Scrooge wanted to embarrass Marley by asking Marley to sit down on a chair but because she is a ghost, she is unable to sit on a chair as she is transparent.
