The general music program at the elementary level is an important and essential part of the school music program because it is the only formal instruction that every student in the class will receive. After this point, students will have the option of choosing whether they want to join the music program/opportunities or pass. The programs at the elementary level involve every student and allows all of them to learn about music by trained teachers.

General music program sometimes suffers when it comes to funding because many people, especially other faculty and board members, may feel as though the subject is not as important as the "core" subjects. Music is often pushed aside when prioritizing who gets funds and although it is unfortunate, it is the situation we live in today.

Spanning around 90 minutes a week, the majority of the music program consists of classroom music, which is music taught to all of the students in a classroom to educate them about music. Different extracurriculars and music activities are offered, one of the most common being a choral group for upper grade students. Recorder classes are also another method of teaching.
