Marjane Satrapi uses visual and textual elements to describe how the Islamic Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War changed Margane's identity. For example in the first chapter of the book one panel shows Margane wearing the veil and Arabic clothes at school right after another panel shows Margane without the veil and wearing Western clothes. This shows the constant tension between public and private places. The quote I chose reflects how state mandates impact individual and collective identities by making radical obligatory changes.

Marjane Satrapi shows how the regime's traditional religious beliefs are no longer stronger. Bigger manifestations as shown in the picture have more progressive and secular ideas. This is shown in various panels of protest against the veil and religious imposing politics and the big discomfort of most of the characters.

The state's oppression is shown in many ways throughout the story. Whether through torture, political prisoners, or the massive killing of protestors. One of the most impactful panels is when the golden key symbolizes materialistic things like rivers of honey and milk or eternal pleasure, which mostly show this paradise. This idea of paradise is easily inculcated into kids who come from a poor background are immature and do not realize the dark reality of war and death.

Marjane Satrapi explores innocence and creativity using irony. In this panel, Margane tries to create games based on the tortures that she heard about. This is ironic as the people who passed through this torture and even died Margane sees them as heroes.

While Persepolis does not have a big focus on technology, the Iran-Iraq War gives us an environment of destruction and misery through technological violence. This is reflected in various panels many of which show how the bombings and attacks have affected day-to-day life.
