Plastic has been around for many years. Ever since the material plastic was created, it had to be recycled for health purposes for the environment. The main reason for recycling plastic is to save space in our planet, which creates more opportunities for land to being built. There are two main innovations that help with plastic waste recycling and creating a healthier food environment for the general public.

Compostable Bags Explanation

Compostable bags are a great source of recycling and saving plastic waste. They are created by Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research that specializes in reducing plastic waste and their goal is to create a healthier environment. Compostable bags are created with a material that is not dependent upon manufactured plastics as actual plastic material is. This means they are renewable and does not to be recycled. The other main benefit of compostable bags is the fact they are healthy for food products such as reducing mold growth and also reducing the smells by keeping food fresh.

Demetra Substance Explanation

Demetra is very similar to compostable bags in terms of plastic saving and especially keeping food healthy and fresh. It is developed by Green Code Srl, a biotechnology start-up, that is was awarded 1st prize in the Everest National Awards 2017. Demetra is an innovation that makes food more sustainable and affordable for the general public. It is basically a substance that gets put in fruits and vegetables to nourish them with the sustainability effect to keep them more fresh and healthy. The two main benefits of using Demetra is to reduce the usage of traditional fertilizers and keeping fruits and vegetable healthy. By reducing the amount of fertilizer bottles being used, more plastic is being saved which contributes to recycling waste solution. The other benefit, as mentioned before, it to nourish fruits and vegetables to keep them more sustainable and affordable at a fair price for consumers overall.

Similarities + Differences

There are a few similarities and differences between compostable bags and Demetra. The major differences is that compostable bags are used for reducing and recycling plastic waste, while Demetra is used for creating a sustainable environment for fruits and vegetables. However, the main similarity between compostable bags and Demetra is that both of them have an economic benefit. Both of them are cheaper to create unlike plastic bags and fertilizer bottles (which are also plastic), which leads them to being more affordable to most consumers to create more sales that would boost the economy overall.
