What was the purpose of Achebe´s response towards this article?

I believe that Achebe used this article as a reference of evidence that the point of view, over the Europeans, in his book was not being exaggerated in order to convince the readers that the natives were victims of European influence but in fact that it was a conclusion that both the natives and Europeans had influences on each other. (Quotes to support found on pages 149 &152)

After reading this article about the Heart of Darkness, written by Achebe, artists and writers should be held to a high standard when it comes to the messaging of their work. Writers write for a purpose, whether it is to persuade, entertain, inform, etc. Writers spread messages through pieces of writing, articles, books, etc. Writers should be held to high standards to be able to produce a productive form of writing or art of their purpose. If a writers purpose was to inform, they must write to inform the readers of what they are writing about. Readers can believe a lot of things that can be untrue. Readers read to gain knowledge or just for the fun of it, but even then people are reading and gaining knowledge. Writers should be responsible for portraying society in a certain way. In Things Fall Apart, Achebe talks about Umuofia and the clans gods and beliefs. Also, he talks bout the white men or Europeans beliefs and how the missionaries are coming to spread their word and gain converts. Achebe could be leaning towards more on Okonkwo side, in having hatred of the Europeans coming and spreading their beliefs. Which can lead to readers thinking more negative towards Christianity and the Europeans coming to gain converts and spread their religion. While , Achebe can be more against Nwoye about converting and agreeing with Okonkwo and being in rage. Readers can have a thought or believe in something and after reading a piece of work can start to question there thoughts on what they thought they believed in, because the people trust the authors thought provoking messages and views. Writers can shape and portray today’s society with their powerful views and messages spread throughout their pieces of work and should be held responsible for portraying society and be held to high standards.

After reading the article written by Achebe, I got an understanding that we got a different view. Achebe was giving a different view from the Europeans, more in depth about their experince because it says, "...upon
arriving in the Congo, he found his steamer damaged and under repair. He soon became ill and returned
to Europe before ever serving as captain." This is giving evidence how when Conrad got to the Congo he got sick and his immune system was not use to the surroundings. Also letting the readers see a little more different view for the Europeans. In Things Fall Apart they are saying how the Europeans are bad and giving them an evil character without really giving any view from the European side. The book also tells a lot how the Europeans are effecting Okonkwo and how he is changing and how its changing the tribe. However in Achebe's writing, he is saying how they arn't as bad as they think however they do have some evil thinking because the Europeans just came in without asking. Achebe just gives more evidence from the Europeans side and their experience more than Things Fall Apart. I think the writers should be held to a higher standard because many people are reading these articles and books and can influence the way people think and approach things.

"Let us give them a portion of the Evil Forest. They boast about victory over death. Let us give them a real battlefield in which to show their victory" (Achebe 147). The European's came into these tribes offering salvation and a new religion of one God who has created all equal and because of this everyone is accepted. After these claims many people of the clans started to convert and accept God as their new and only god. Leaders and elders of the tribe started to see these white men as a threat to their future beliefs and refused to stay without action. People of the tribe wanted to rid these men just as much as the white men wanted people to convert. Both the natives and white men did damage to each other because of their diverse opposing views.

"Why he cried in his heart..."(Achebe 152). This quotes depicts how the European's coming has effected Okonkwo. The quote is surrounded my powerful contexts filled with anger and despair. Just as Okonkwo has had his child taken into another religion many people of his clan and others can be going through the same situation. The clan's loyalty to their Gods is broken and so is the loyalty among family.
