At the time things were changing socially, people (the Medici) were coming into power, there was a hierarchy being developed and the ways of the church were being displaced in favour of the classical views - principles from Greek and Roman art were being re-established though the renaissance. The idea of 'Humanism' was very important during this time Raphael was a painter and was thought to be "the epitome of purity, taste, refinement, and excellence" though he did draw insertion from the works of Michelangelo. Michelangelo was a painter, sculptor and architect, though his main trade was as a sculptor. He went to a art school started by the Medici, he didn't really like Raphael. Donatello was commissioned by the Medici (Cosimo Medici) to create David - the first free standing nude since Roman times - this showed the changing views as nudity was not seen as christen values and the fact that this David was a boy whom had not yet become a man thought puberty. Michelangelo created his David after the Medici had fled Florence and it was to demonstrate and represent the biblical hero David, and the strength of the church.

What was happening socially at the time of the Renaissance?
There was a massive shift in thinking towards greco-roman antiquity. Artists, scholars, the Catholic Chruch, everything was influenced by this, I don't know, intellectual revolution. This is shown very clearly in the art produced, but also by historical events, like the Protestant Reformation.
What was valued?
A primary value was God. Christianity, and more specifically Catholicism, was the only way of life for Europe. God the centre of everything, and the Catholic Church's teaching was law. Other values started to become apparent as well. The Classical world and replicating it was important. Focus on humanity and creation became common. Power and money, as always in history, were important. One way those who had power and money showed this off was by funding art centered around God and the Church.
Who was Michelangelo?
Michelangelo was a master painter, architect, poet, and sculptor in the Italian High Renaissance. His most famous works include statues David and Pieta, and his frescos in the Sistine Chapel. He was born in 1475 and died in 1564. He studied in the sculpture gardens of the Medici under Bertoldo di Giovanni. Michelangelo was a master at creating realistic and precise forms of the human body (although he did on occasion steer away from this, like in the Last Judgement).
Who was Raphael?
Raphael was a master painter and architect in the Italian High Renaissance. His most famous works include paintings of Madonna and in the Vatican, including Stanza della Segnatura. He was born in 1483 and died in 1520. He was taught by a number of artists, beginning with Pietro Perugino, then inspired by the renowned Italian Renaissance artists Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. However, unlike these artists, he aimed for a calmer style.

Another thing to consider was that the Medici's had papal ambitions. The Catholic church was still considerably influential.
