This three-year full-time programme leads to the award of BSc (Hons) in Nursing and professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council UK (sub part 1 as an Adult, Child, Mental Health or Learning Disability nurse):

Theoretical and practice learning are integrated throughout the course in an equal balance as required by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
Each theoretical module is worth 30 credits.
All modules are compulsory and must all be passed leading to 120 credits being studied in each academic year.
Modules are designed to be progressive and incremental with an emphasis on building on prior knowledge through a scaffolding approach. Theoretical modules prepare students for practice learning and the application of knowledge and skills to real world scenarios.

In addition, students undertake placements throughout the year which are aligned to the Practice Experiences modules that run across each year. The practice components of these modules include pass or fail non-credit weighted components.

Contact the Year Lead and Programme Leader about general matters relating to the programme of study (e.g. applications for changes in registration, module changes, and general enquiries).

If you are absent from university and scheduled classes for any reason (e.g. illness/family commitments), you must notify your personal tutor and other relevant module colleagues at the earliest possible opportunity by email.

Please do not interrupt staff who are on campus working in their offices. Please email the member of staff to request an appointment. The NMC requires the University to ensure that all nursing students demonstrate good health, good character and fitness to practice.

You will be required to complete a self-declaration form annually. Declaration of good health and character is required for entry to the register, to facilitate this you will also be required to complete a declaration on completion of the programme. Failed modules and reassessment opportunities

If you fail a module (i.e. at the end of the year your overall module mark is less than the required minimum), you will not receive credit for it and therefore you may not meet the progression or award requirements for your level. If you do not meet the progression or award requirements for your level and have sufficient reassessment opportunity, you will be required to retrieve the failure in order to progress or obtain an award. This is known as a reassessment.

Reassessment usually means that you will be asked to resubmit failed coursework or resit failed examinations. Reassessment advice detailing which assessment elements you are required to resubmit will be sent to you. Assignment briefs for specific assessment elements will also be posted on LearningZone.

As you cannot progress or achieve an award until successful completion of any reassessments, it is vital that you attempt all reassessments in the reassessment period immediately following the notification of your failure(s). For more information on reassessment, see Section 5 of the

Practice progression

Practice Experience 1, 2 and 3 embed the practice requirements for nursing alongside an assignment which carries credits.

Each non-credit weighted component can be reassessed on one occasion. Each credit-weight component can be reassessed in line with the academic regulations. For more, please see the programme specific regulations.

If a year 3 student does not meet the essential practice requirements by the end of the academic year, their registration will need to be extended to allow an extension to the programme for successful completion of practice requirements. This will need to be applied for. Students can only have one programme extension.

Failure of assessment components in practice can lead to discontinuation from the programme. For more details, please see the programme specific regulations.

Academic progression

For modules commenced from the 2024/25 academic year, reassessments will be administed in accordance with the details in section 2 of the academic regulations as noted above. Students will have one first submission + two resubmission attempts for each module. Where there are exceptions to this, these are detailed in the programme specific regulations as noted above.

A non-submission will be counted as an attempt.

All resubmissions will be capped at 40%. If you are unclear about the requirements of reassessment, you should speak to your Year LEad who will be able to explain this further to you.

Having to complete reassessments will likely impact the timeline of your programme. For more information, please seek advice from your personal tutor and Year Lead.

As per the programme specific regulations, students must have passed at least 60 credits of modules to progress to the next level of undergraduate study at the progression board and then have achieved 90 credits by the reassessment board. If students have not achieved either of these milestones, they will be back-grouped to allow additional submissions, if they have resubmission opportunities available.

Criminal offences

As a student on the programme you will already have provided DBS disclosure which the University will have appraised and deemed as acceptable. The University does not keep a copy of your DBS document, so you must keep a copy safe in case it is required by a placement provider. If there is a delay in this process, you will not be allowed into practice areas until the DBS clearance is obtained.

The University will confirm your suitability for admission to the NMC professional register. While a student of the University you are required to inform the Programme Leader in the first instance of a potential criminal investigation and of any criminal convictions, cautions, warnings, reprimands or bind overs. It is important that you take this action immediately because failure formally to notify the University of any investigation which might lead to a criminal conviction may result in you being discontinued on the programme.

Note: It is a professional expectation that you act in a way that protects the public. It is not unusual for a student faced with a potential criminal investigation to under-estimate the significance of their situation. If you take the immediate action the University can advise you quickly of the professional implications of your situation. A criminal record will not automatically prevent a student from admission to the NMC professional register. Failure to comply with these requirements may result in you being investigated by Fitness to Practice procedure.

The initial registration process at the end of year 3

Once you have completed your course, your university will upload to our database your course details and personal information (such as name, address and date of birth). After confirming your qualification details, we will inform you by post within 7–10 working days.

Your university will also return a declaration confirming your good health and good character. To join the register, you're advised to create an account with NMC Online. You can pay the registration fee and complete an application form online.

At this point, you must declare any police cautions or criminal convictions to us. For information on how to do this, please see our section on declaring cautions and convictions.
When they receive all of the information we need, a registrations officer will review your documents. If everything is completed correctly, your application will be processed and you will be on our register within 2–10 working days. Use NMC Online to check if your application has been accepted, as well as to download and print a statement of entry.

If you make an application six months or more after completing your nursing or midwifery programme, you are required to complete a separate application. It is important that you apply to register within five years of your course completion date or you will not be able to register with us. If you do not register your qualification within five years, you will have to complete a pre-registration programme again or a test of competence.

Please read the standards and guidance on registering more than five years after qualifying. Your potential employers can use the online confirmation service to check your registration as the statement of entry is not proof of registration.

Withdrawing from the programme

Sometimes students decide that they wish to withdraw from their studies – that is, leave their programme at the university completely.

If you are considering withdrawing or transferring, please see your Year Lead to discuss the matter. If you do decide to withdraw, you must inform the Associate Dean (Academic) in writing. You will be asked to state your last day of attendance; this date will be confirmed with your Programme/Module Leader and is the date notified to the Student Loans Company and used to determine the academic fee due. You should therefore take advice on the financial implications of withdrawal from study from DMU Money and Welfare in The Student Gateway in the Gateway building.

It is most important that you do not leave without telling us and that you inform us of your last date of attendance. If you do leave without officially telling us then your last day of attendance will be the end of the academic year and you will therefore be liable for the full University fees for the whole academic year.

Leave of absence (LOA)

If you are prevented from continuing your studies for ill-health or some other legitimate cause, you must apply to the Associate Dean (Academic) for your studies to be interrupted. You will be expected to provide a written, or word-processed, explanation of the circumstances, accompanied by professional third-party evidence to support your request; interruption of studies will not be considered without third party evidence to support it. Interruption requests must be received by the Associate Dean (Academic) before the final submission deadline for work on your programme.

To discuss a LOA, please contact your Year Lead in the first instance.

Please note, students returning from a period of interruption are not eligible to attend any exam during the first six weeks of your return to the programme. This is to allow for the appropriate exam preparation and for the Examinations team time to put any special requirements in place.

Each programme has at least one External Examiner who is not part of DMU teaching staff but from another Higher Education institution. Their role is to assure academic standards on the programme and to ensure that students are receiving the best possible learning experience. The External examiner acts as an independent and impartial adviser. They ensure that awards granted by the university are comparable in standard to those of other higher education institutions, that national subject threshold standards are complied with, and that the treatment of students is equitable and fair.

Academic Offenses

If you are suspected of committing an academic offence you will be called to a meeting with an academic practice officer (APO). APOs are based within in each faculty and it is their role to advise on how to prevent bad academic practice and academic offences and to deal with serious cases.

You have the right to be accompanied by a member of De Montfort University Students' Union, university staff or your family but not normally a solicitor or barrister acting in a professional capacity. If you prefer, you can make a written statement instead of attending the meeting.

At the meeting, the APO will discuss the alleged offence with you. The APO may also suggest further training or remedial work. If the APO considers you guilty, they will impose an appropriate penalty.

If your offence is a second offence or is otherwise deemed serious it will be referred to a panel.

Penalties that can be imposed by an APO include:

Setting aside the component or assignment concerned and requiring you to complete it as if for the first time
Failure of the component. You will be reassessed and the mark capped if appropriate and not disproportionate in effect
Failure of the component and the module. You will be reassessed in the module.
APO will, following discussion with a colleague from the Academic Support Office, submit your case to the Academic Offences Panel

Deferrals

Deferral refers to the rescheduling of an assessment or an exam to a later date. If a deferral is granted, the student is required to take the next available date for their assessment submission or exam to take place.

Deferrals usually require supporting evidence documents to be submitted along with the request form.

Extensions

If your circumstances are preventing you from submitting your coursework on time, you can apply for a coursework extension. An extension gives you extra time to complete and submit a piece of work, agreed between you and your tutor or module leader.

Recommending that the student should be suspended for a defined period of time with return to study subject to conditions
Recommending that the student should be terminated from the programme as unfit to practice.

The investigator must conduct the investigation in a timely manner using appropriate methods of evidence gathering which may include:

interviews with relevant University staff, professional or practice partner colleagues
interviewing the student concerned
obtaining a written professional opinion on the effect of the student’s behaviour or state of health/well-being on their fitness to practice
obtaining other relevant documents
obtaining information about the student’s progress on the course
Requiring the student to attend the Occupational Health Services.

The student may be accompanied in all meetings and interviews by a representative as defined in the Glossary to the University’s Regulations. The investigator should be accompanied in all meetings and interviews with the student by a colleague who will make a written summary of discussions, outcomes and actions. This summary will be shared with the student.

If relevant information should come to light at any time during the investigation, the investigator may, after consultation with the Head of School, recommend that the student should be suspended from practice and/or theory. Any such suspension should be imposed in accordance with the relevant provisions of the University’s Regulations.
The investigating officer will make a written report on their investigation to the Head of School. On receipt of an investigation report, the Head of School, in consultation with the relevant programme leader and, where appropriate, practice or professional partner, will decide whether the concerns are groundless or have been addressed or whether, in the light of the investigation, the matter should be referred to a Fitness to Practice panel hearing for further consideration. The Head of School/Panel Chair will then write to the student to inform them of the outcome of the investigation. This stage of the procedure should normally take no more than five working days.

*Note that any suspension from practice must be reviewed and confirmed by the senior member of staff designated to deal with such matters under the University’s General Regulations and Procedures Affecting Students.

The panel has discretion to make any decision appropriate to the circumstances, wherever possible with the student’s agreement.

Concerns about a student’s fitness to practice may be raised from any source, including any member of staff, fellow students, placement partner, and members of the public or other agencies such as the Police, Social Services or Occupational Health Service. These may include concerns about a student’s:

health or well-being
attitude or behaviour in either practice or theory
poor or non-attendance in either practice or theory
bad time-keeping
breaking the University’s disciplinary code
behaviour outside the University which might render them unfit to practice
previous offending background

This list provides examples and is not exhaustive. Concerns must be raised in writing addressed to the Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery. The person raising concerns is expected to identify themselves; anonymous allegations will not normally be acted on. In some circumstances it may be possible to keep the identity of the person raising concerns confidential if this would be in either their own or the student’s best interests.
On receipt of a written statement of concern, the Head of School will discuss the matter with the relevant Programme Leader to find out whether they are aware of the concerns and, if so, whether any attempt has been made to resolve the matter informally. If not, the Programme Leader will normally be asked to try to resolve the matter and will report the outcome to the Head of School. This stage of the procedure should normally take no more than five working days.

If the matter cannot be resolved informally, the Faculty Lead for Fitness to Practice will appoint an investigator. The Head of School will inform the student in writing:

of the concerns raised about him/her
that an investigation is to be conducted under this procedure
the identity of the investigator
procedure (after consultation with the appropriate professional or practice partner)
whether he/she will be recommending that the student should be suspended from the University pending the outcome of the procedure
of their right to be represented by a person as defined in the Glossary to the University’s Regulations (normally the De Montfort Students’ Union)
and will provide the student with a copy of this procedure document.

This procedure is set in the context of the University’s framework for dealing with student welfare and discipline. It should be read in conjunction with the University’s General Regulations and Procedures Affecting Students (the University’s Regulations), particularly those sections of Chapter 2: Students of concern.

The University expects students enrolled on courses leading directly to a professional qualification or the right to practice a particular profession or calling, to demonstrate high standards of behaviour in their professional and student lives. Course handbooks and professional bodies provide information about the standards of behaviour expected of students training for a particular profession or calling. It is the student’s responsibility to familiarise themselves with the provisions and requirements of the relevant professional bodies.

Students on courses in the School of Nursing and Midwifery leading to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) must comply with the NMCs requirements for registration. The NMC requires all trainees to demonstrate that they have good health and good character “sufficient for safe and effective practice as a nurse or midwife” before they begin and during any programme which leads to registration with the NMC. Anybody entering the NMC register for the first time is required to declare that they are of good health and good character. This self-declaration must be supported by the registered nurse responsible for the programme that is the Programme Leader for nursing students and the Lead Midwife for Education for Midwifery students. The Leicester School of Nursing and Midwifery therefore needs to ensure that all such students are fit to practice in terms of good health and good character and that any concerns about fitness to practice are addressed in a timely and appropriate manner.

They take into account: student feedback, external examiner feedback, a wide range of metrics and data, university and sector good practice, external requirements set out by the Office for Students and professional, statutory and regulatory bodies (where applicable). This review assures the quality and standards of your programme which includes that the programme content is relevant, current and appropriately challenging. Your programme is managed academically by several Boards. These include Programme Management Boards or Subject Academic Committees and Progression & Award Boards. The Boards are comprised of members of academic staff (mainly the programme/subject and module leaders for a particular subject area), staff from central University departments (such as the Department of Academic Quality) External Examiners (usually experienced academics from other Universities) and Course reps (sit on Programme Management Boards (PMB) or Subject Academic Committees (SAC)).

Programme boards meet in two modes:

· As a Programme Management Board or Subject Academic Committee which meets to review the management of your programme, and consider issues raised by Student Representatives.

· As a Progression & Award Board (PAB) which meets to approve your marks; agree whether or not you can proceed into your next year; agree the final classification of your degree. Once the PAB has met, results are deemed to have been ratified (approved) by the University

Anonymous marking

The process of marking work anonymously is intended to eliminate any unintentional bias on the part of assessors and to reassure students that the marking process is fair and impartial. Most assignments are marked anonymously. Your tutors will inform you if your assignment is to be submitted and marked anonymously. The process of submitting your anonymous assignment to Turnitin remains the same, except that you need to ensure that your name is visible on your assignment. Once the work has been marked and feedback is available, you will be able to access the same Turnitin link to which you submitted your work.

Turnitin (via LearningZone) is a text-matching tool used for plagiarism detection to which you will be introduced during your first year of academic study. It is a web-based plagiarism detection tool widely used in UK universities and schools/ colleges. It searches the current and archived internet documents, papers submitted by other students, and identifies any similarities between texts.

The aim of using this software is to deter plagiarism, rather than to detect it and punish you.

Assessment strategy

The assessment strategy within this programme endeavours to have assessments that are authentic to the real world of nursing practice, with the aim of encouraging students to take a deeper approach to your learning.

Assessment is integral to the learning process, however for it to be meaningful and to encourage a deeper approach to learning it has been planned and clearly aligned to the programme learning and module outcomes.

The sequencing of assessment throughout this programme has been employed, aiding incremental development of knowledge and skills.

The programme team have actively planned assessment to ensure a balanced spread of student workload. We have worked to develop more creative ways of assessment that will enhance student engagement, motivation and encourage reflection on your learning.

In developing an authentic assessment strategy, we involved key stakeholders including practice partners, students and service users. Assessment within modules has been planned to enable students to have their assessments staggered, so they do not all come in at the same time.

Special arrangements for students with disabilities are facilitated in accordance with the University policy and guidance from the examination office and student wellbeing. All assessments are subject to quality assurance processes of internal and external moderation frameworks to safeguard standards in line with University policy.

As a School, we deliver feedback through embracing technological tools to support this process and this is achieved using Turnitin. Feedback/feedforward for assessment is returned as per University policy and is available online.

Feedback has been built into the MYEPAD at regular intervals in practice learning experiences. The process for this review creates the conditions whereby the student and practice supervisor/assessor can engage in a critical dialogue that can feed into an action plan for ongoing development.

Assessment criteria and grade descriptors

Tutors use a set of assessment criteria against which each project is assessed. Assessment criteria are usually stated with the assessment brief and are directly related to the learning outcomes for the module, which are listed in each Module handbook.

Modules are marked in a range of 0-100%. These descriptors are inter-related: with regards to marks of 40% and above, there is an assumption that in awarding marks in one band work will have met the requirements of the previous band; with regards to marks of 39% and below there is an assumption that in awarding marks in one band will not have met the requirements of the previous higher band.

Assessment specific rubrics have been designed as appropriate for each theoretical module assessment and are used in combination with mark descriptors to assign your mark. The final mark awarded to a piece of work will be informed by how it corresponds to these mark descriptors and the rubric.

You need to be logged in to your DMU student email account. DO NOT USE YOUR PERSONAL EMAIL ACCOUNT. Please note that if you try to log in to a synchronous online class through your personal email account, you will not be able to register your attendance correctly.

It is important that this information is recorded accurately as the data will be used to ensure your compliance with DMU’s Attendance Monitoring Policy (link to DMU Student General Regulations here). Completing the on-line attendance monitoring should be quick and easy to do. If you experience any problems, please speak to your tutor in the first instance.

On campus sessions

Where you are physically attending the university, in order to register your attendance, it is important that you sign the register in class or swipe your student card against the reader (in rooms fitted with card readers). Please note that you will be recorded as absent if your attendance is not recorded at your timetabled activities. You may only change tutorial or seminar group with the approval of the senior member of academic staff in the faculty and by completing the relevant form available from the Student Advice Centre. Please note that tutorial/seminar group changes are only for extenuating circumstances relating to disability/carers or childcare reasons and are subject to capacity and availability which are dependent upon timetabling.

It is important to attend all your timetabled sessions in order to benefit fully from your course. If you experience difficulty in attending classes for any reason then please discuss the matter with your Personal Tutor in the first instance so that they can help or advise you, or signpost you to suitable support. Poor attendance may result in low marks or even fails, as attendance and performance in assessments are often closely linked. DMU has an Attendance Monitoring policy (which can be found within the DMU Student General Regulations) and we do record attendance throughout the academic year. Failure to attend scheduled teaching may result in discontinuation from the university.

Course Reps

Course representatives are in place for undergraduate and post graduate courses. Their role includes listening to students on their course and feeding back to programme leads on any issues or queries with regards to the course/modules. They are expected to attend some key University meetings such as Staff Student Consultative Committees/Student Voice Committees and Programme Management Boards/Subject Academic Committees. Meetings are co-ordinated by the programme team and are typically held three times per academic year. As a Course Rep you would also be invited to attend the regular meetings scheduled by the DSU Voice team. These meetings are designed to ensure DSU are engaging with the Course Reps to understand the general feeling and consensus of students on a faculty level and their course to feedback on the wider topics and support course reps on a 121 basis if any further action is needed.

How to become a course rep
All Course Reps are elected and supported through DSU, and training is also held for elected Course Reps for them to explore and understand their role to get the best out of their role. It is structured so you always have an independent place to go for guidance. As a Course Rep, you will develop personally and professionally through bespoke training and guidance. De Montfort University’s virtual learning environment is called LearningZone and it can be accessed from anywhere by pointing your internet browser to: LearningZone and then logging in with your DMU user ID and password.

Placement allocation

Placement allocations are coordinated by the Allocations Team.

You may be allocated to any clinical practice areas/units in Leicester/shire or surrounding counties. Students are responsible for their placement travel arrangements.

You must be prepared to attend the placement you have been allocated and any extenuating circumstances (e.g. a conflict of interest) must be communicated by writing to your programme leader with as much notice as possible. Although such circumstances will be given due consideration, we cannot make any guarantees to accommodate personal circumstances and students should be prepared to attend their allocated placements.

Individual off-duty (rota) and PS/PA allocation is the responsibility of the clinical practice area and is usually arranged prior to the commencement of the placement.
If you have problems accessing appropriate off-duty or supervision, talk to your PA/AA or the practice learning lead/student link for the placement area.
You will be expected to experience care over a 24-hour period. This will include week-ends, night shifts and Bank Holidays.

Throughout your practice placements, you will spend periods of time in a number of different practice settings where you will learn about the practical aspects of nursing and work towards achieving NMC competencies related to your chosen field of practice.

All practice assessments of professional values are embedded in the Practice Experience modules. Essential components of these modules are described as MUST PASS in order to be successful on the programme. Please see the module guide within the content folder for the Practice Experience modules.

The practice modules have a number of elements which are tracked and monitored via a number of important documents:

The PAD contains evidence of achievement of practice outcomes for each part of the programme and for registration with the NMC. Your PS/PAs will complete the relevant sections of the PAD and make judgements about your achievement and progression.

Each year is divided into parts. Within each part you will be required to complete placement documentation for that placement.

Professional Values in practice will also be assessed. This will be monitored continuously in every practice placement. PS/PAs will make a judgement regarding your professional values at the end of each practice placement.

Practice learning

You are required to complete at least 2,300 hours of practice learning where you will be working towards achieving practice proficiencies and demonstrating professional values.

You will be placed in a variety of practice settings throughout the programme including hospitals, community settings and other areas of health and social care.
The programme utilises the NMC (2018) Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment (SSSA).

You will be allocated practice supervisors (PS) and a practice assessor (PA) when on placement. PS and PAs will work together with your Academic Assessor (AA) to provide support and guidance throughout your placement. All parties will be involved in the monitoring your progress, the acquisition of skills and the integration of knowledge into practice.
