And she wrote the book in part because she sees the world as shifting more toward Gilead than away from it, a sentiment unlikely to dissipate in the near future. She knew she couldn't re-create Offred's voice. But as she saw the world change, she realized Offred wasn't the only way back into the story. She began drafting The Testaments partway through 2016.She understood people wanted to know what happened to Offred, but it was the book she just couldn't write.
