REFLECTION ON BLUE EYE SAMURAI EPISODE 8

Rewatching Blue Eye Samurai Episode 8 with a critical lens significantly deepened my understanding of the show's commentary on imperialism and cultural erasure. One of the most striking moments in the episode was Abijah Fowler's monologue before attempting to assassinate the shogun: "I couldn't discover a new world, so I will reveal one. My new shogun will break open your welded borders. Open Japan-wide to the West. We'll flood your land with our people, our music, our shame, bread, and milk until you think an ugly face like mine is more beautiful than your own." At first glance, this statement may seem like a mere threat to the shogun. Still, upon closer analysis, it encapsulates the brutal reality of Western imperialism—not just in Japan but on a global scale. Historically, Western colonizers have used both military force and cultural domination to reshape nations, imposing foreign customs and values while simultaneously eroding indigenous traditions. In this sense, Fowler's words serve as a chilling reminder of how colonialism was not just about territorial conquest but also about ideological control.

From the perspective of Louis Althusser's theory in Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses, the dominant ideology in this episode is the Western colonial mindset, precisely its justification of cultural and economic expansion. More specifically, Fowler represents the Repressive State Apparatus (RSA), as he uses direct violence and political intervention to impose Western rule. However, beyond sheer force, his vision extends to a much more insidious form of control that infiltrates Japan's identity. His mention of "bread and milk" symbolically illustrates how Ideological State Apparatuses (ISAs)—such as education, media, and culture—gradually condition people into accepting Western norms as superior. Consequently, this aligns with Althusser's argument that ideology functions through oppression and subtle persuasion, shaping people's perceptions until they internalize foreign dominance as natural or desirable. Thus, the episode effectively demonstrates how colonization operates on multiple levels, using physical coercion and ideological infiltration to assert control.

Moreover, rewatching this episode with a critical lens significantly heightened my awareness of how deeply ingrained these imperialist ideologies remain in modern society. The first time I watched it, I was initially captivated by the intensity of the moment and the sheer audacity of Fowler's words. However, upon revisiting the scene, I began to see it as more than just a fictional villain's rant—instead, it felt eerily reminiscent of real-world historical narratives. Throughout history, the West has successfully infiltrated cultures worldwide, influencing everything from language to entertainment and even perceptions of beauty, just as Fowler arrogantly predicted. As a result, this realization made the scene even more unsettling, as it emphasized that colonization is not merely a thing of the past but rather an ongoing process that continues to shape societies today.

Ultimately, Blue Eye Samurai does more than simply tell a compelling revenge story; it offers a sharp critique of imperialism and cultural hegemony. In particular, Episode 8 is a powerful reminder of how dominant ideologies function—not only through force but also through the slow erosion of identity and self-worth. By critically examining this scene, I connected fiction to reality, reinforcing how media can serve as both a mirror and a warning about our world.

My self-portrait in digital smudge art reflects how I see myself—soft yet firm, bold yet introspective. The pink and purple hues represent my creativity and warmth, colors that make me feel at home in my own skin. My flowing hair, transitioning from deep purple to lighter shades, symbolizes my growth and constant change, reminding me that I am constantly evolving. The sharp winged eyeliner and bold red lips are my personal trademarks, expressing my confidence and passion for self-expression. Through the soft blending and dreamy textures, I wanted to capture not just my face but the quiet strength and depth of my emotions.
