Young children who use some adult language forms will probably be regarded as sophisticated, or even pass unnoticed. However, if an adult chooses a children-exclusive term, they will sound childish. Similarly, when teenagers choose adult usage, they will regularly attract little attention. Conversely, middle-aged individuals using modern terms might be judged. This would be a marked case.

This has been attributed to the desired use of the standard language that is used in the workplace. Eckert, Penelope (1997)
- Other reasons: social pressure and child rearing.
- According to Holmes (1992:186) "in their 'middle years' people are most likely to recognize the society's speech norms and use the fewest vernacular forms".
- They have undergone what Chambers (2003: 195) calls linguistic "retrenchment": a retreat from the non-standard variants used in youth followed by stabilization.

 The second person singular pronoun has two forms "vos" and "usted" Along with their associated verbal forms. The first one is the unmarked case, is known as "Voseo" and is used in informal conversations with friends and family, whereas the second is marked, and used in formal situations to refer to superiors, strangers, and generally, the elderly. In other words, asymmetrical relations.
