According to the "History" website, most roman's lived in small smelly rooms. These apartments were hot,dirty, and crowded. A good portion of the roman people rented the upper apartments because they were cheaper to pay for. They were also much more dangerous. People were often thrown out to the streets for not being able to pay rent.
