Working with two partners on a shared Google Doc, discuss three patterns you see emerging in The Odyssey. Then, identify three symbols that appear in the selections we have read, and explain their significance.

When time is called, post your responses here. Be sure to add the names of all group members.

Andy
A pattern I noticed is that Odysseus will initially outsmart the monster he's fighting, but then gets cocky and provokes the monster by bragging. This says that Odysseus starts off thinking sensible, but loses that skill in stressful situations due to arrogance.
A symbol I noticed is Odysseus´s sword, which he uses to convince the gods to help him. This shows that he hasn't learned how to get help that isn't through force.

Ella
A pattern that Odysseus seems to encounter is that he will search for resources himself and tends to get a bit greedy. For example, Odysseus stayed with Calypso because she offered him great materials to build his boat for his journey. This also pops up when he stays with Circles in her house because she offers him and his crew good food and resources.
A symbol I noticed are the tapestries that the Nymphs make. They tell a story and it is important because it shows that the women featured in the story can be great story tellers and present a lot through their art.

Brooke
A pattern that I noticed is that monsters and myths present the obstacles.
The cycle of facing the adventure, failing in the beginning, learning from the failure, undoing of learning, eating and drinking, and moving on.

A symbol that I noticed is that the monsters represent the unseen and unknown.
The tapestry is a symbol because it represents a story being told in the fabric that has different styles and designs.

One pattern that I have seen throughout reading book 9 and book 10 is that every time Odysseus and his comrades beach onto an island they are all sent out to go explorer and scavenge the land for resources and other items that they can hoard and take for greed. | One symbol I found throughout reading book 9 and book 10 are the sails on board the boats. The sails symbolize his (Odysseus) way of moving forward. The Sails can also symbolize his journey and how far Odysseus has reached along his journey and how much he has left of it. | Mathew Ravin
One pattern I see is everytime Odysseus goes somewhere he constantly meets a new god, either a good or a bad god. | One symbol I found was the ships that show human creation and construction. The ships were transportation for the humans and symbolize what they rely on. | Nic Mazzochi
One pattern realized is this whole time Odysseus isn't planned to stop anywhere. He ends up getting interrupted from his journey and having to deal with a god, monster, etc. | One symbol I found is the pigs. Being turned into a pig could symbolize being useless and dirty which could be the symbol of being turned into that animal because of its traits. | Xavier

What do the patterns suggest to you about Odysseus's thinking? That he wants to see if there anyone on the island that he goes to a high place and looking down to try and find resources that can make him continue on his journey.
The highest point of the island is a symbol in book 10 because its his way of saying that he is in a higher place that other people ( villagers).
Pattern that I’ve noticed is that the gods always help out odysseus. Circé had given him advice on his journey
A symbol in book 9 the cyclops only had one eye. The one eye is a symbol of blindness. The cyclops is not self aware and has a temper.
A pattern that stays on the low key in book 10 is the trust his men have towards Odyseus. Like times they have before they haven’t trusted Odyseus, and now they suspected he was hoarding treasure just to find out it was a bag of winds from Aeolus the god of winds. Odysseus’ crew didn’t trust him because they feel they’re being used but deep down Odyseus doesn’t feel that way even if it seems like it.
A big symbol in book ten; Aeaea turns all of Odysseus’ men into pigs. She could have turned them into another animal with more special abilities but didn’t. She’s saying they’re just pirates with one goal. She refers to the saying “greedy pig” and turns them into pigs because thats the way they are and how they act.
