When a scene is being recorded for a drama they will use a clapper board to send a loud noise which creates a spike in the audio track of both the camera ( currently known as scratch audio) and also to the audio recording kit then in post production when the audio is imported from the separate audio recording the spikes are matched to create synchronisation of both sound tracks and visuals.

Automated dialogue replacement (ADR) to replace location dialogue

ADR is normally used to fix dialogue and a replacement for situations that are to difficult to record sound on , e.g. near a beach. They will go into a sound editing suite and watch the visuals and at the same time they will keep trying to get the lip synch correct. They will re-record dialogue by the original actor after the filming process to improve audio quality or reflect dialogue changes that happen during recordings.

Sound effects are sometimes replaced after the initial shoot an example would be somebody washing up at the same time as doing dialogue , to avoid the high pitched frequency of somebody smashing a folk against a cup while dialogue is being recorded the actor would be careful with the movements in the synch to avoid high level noise then in post production they would possibly put in the sounds of somebody moving pots about in a sink to make it sound realistic and controllable as they can control the level of sounds in the mix. In dramas as they are usually sat in a studio you will sometimes hear a dog balk to make it sound realistic - this is a sound effect and is called diegetic sound. The dog is added in later for realism as if the shot was completely still and nobody was talking it would be dull.

A 60 second audio track will be recorded in complete silence , no noises what so ever will be picked up-this is called a wild track. When this has been done all the background sounds such as , wind , cars, inside fans from computers or noise in the room will be added onto the wild track in an editing suite separately -these are called additional sound effects.

This happens sometimes in dramas and its reflective of a situation or a character in a TV program. For example , when somebody is walking down the street the music will be in time with their foot prints and can reflect their personality or even their mood. For example in Pretty little liars when somebody has died they will play slow calm depressing music reflecting the mood of the characters that are grieving to show the way they are feeling.

Although this isn't to do with specific radio broadcasts. Speech and dialogue editing happens during advertisements in radio to retain rhythm. This is when the music and speech is sped up so the advertisers get the point across to the audience in a quick and easy way without being slow and boring with too much information.
