Evidence: Equality breaks many rules set forth by the society, writing down his discoveries and neglecting his assignment, but he does it because of his curious nature and tenacity.

2. Only you can control yourself
Evidence: Even when Equality is judged by his peers and sent to be punished severely, Equality evades it by realizing there was no one to stop him from walking out.

3. Emotions can be a good thing
Evidence: The Golden One followed Equality into the forest because she saw her chance and recognized her feelings for him, and because of her feelings for Equality, she was able to rebel as well and be with him.

4. It's okay to be selfish
Evidence: Equality and International didn't stay together very long because Equality wanted to continue making discoveries and International didn't want to break the rules.

5. Change isn't always good
Evidence: The utopia created in the book is a lot more intense and rigid than today's current society and is not fair in any way, and because of this flaw, emotions have basically been outlawed. For example, it teaches us about basic human behavior and what happens when you rip even that from us, it teaches that no matter how flawless your society is, someone will always have curiosity in their genes and tear the society to shreds.

I didn't like that there was little to no explanation of why things were the way they were and that the description of how the society works barely provides any reason, and I also didn't like that there was no explanation of how this society came to be.
