Share at least one "Moment of Awe" either as an educator or student. If you have more than one example that is fine. Please take the time to read your classmate(s)' "awe" moments.

I LOVE genetics and DNA! My moments of awe was learning about DNA in my molecular class and my genetics class in college. It never ceases to amaze me how 4 letters control every aspect of all living things from a single cell bacterium to humans and everything in-between. My entire molecular biology class in college was amazing. I was captivated everyday learning about how DNA works, how cell's just do their thing without us ever knowing, and with almost no noticeable mistakes! When I talk to my 7th graders about DNA and Genetics, I know they can feel my excitement. The questions I get and the conversations we have tell me that they know how much I love it. It's the best!

I always tell students in my Psychology classes on their first day that it is my favorite class to teach. My moment of awe with Psychology was when I first learned about brain plasticity also known as neuroplasticity. I'll never forget watching a video of the story of a girl named Jodi who had the entire right hemisphere of her brain removed. In theory, Jodi should have been paralyzed on the left side of the body as the right hemisphere controls the left side of the body. Instead, Jodi was walking out of the hospital in less than two weeks only experiencing slight paralysis in her left hand due to the amazing concept of brain plasticity. Learning and teaching about this concept is what really turned me from enjoying teaching Psychology to LOVING teaching it. I show the video to my students each year when teaching the topic and always nerd out at how cool the story is. It is fun to see student's wowed by the same video that once blew me away!

I was raised on a dairy farm, and my brother and his wife still own and operate the farm. One of our units in the spring is to teach about farm animals, and then we take a field trip to a local dairy farm. The farmer shows the students what the cows eat, sleep, the milking parlor and how much milk they produce in a day. Then the students get to pet the calves and some other farm animals.

This is always one of my favorite days because many of my students have never seen/touched a cow. Their little eyes light up as they have this first experience.

Growing up, the farm life became commonplace because I experienced it daily. Now as a teacher, it is so fun to share this experience with my students as they see the things we learned in the classroom right in front of their eyes.
