Robert E. Lee was an American general, most known for being the general of the Confederate army during the U.S Civil War. Born in 1807, Lee was a West Point graduate and later helped in putting down John Brown's raid in Harper's Ferry. When Southern secession began, Lee chose to side with his people rather than become a general for Lincoln. During the beginning of the Civil War, Lee led the Confederate Army throughout many great victories. However, later in the Civil War and after suffering many defeats, Lee and his forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House in 1865, which aided in the ending of the Civil War.
Source: Battlefields.org

Fort Sumter, a fort in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, was most known for being the location of the first shots of the Civil War. After South Carolina's secession, U.S Major Robert Anderson occupied the fort. This created a standoff between the local militia and Anderson's forces. When Lincoln tried to resupply the fort, Confederate General P.G.T Beauregard attacked Anderson's forces at the fort. The battle ended with Anderson's surrender and the beginning of the Civil War.
Source: History.com

The 13th Amendment is the amendment responsible for the abolition of slavery in the U.S. Although the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed Confederate slaves, came before the 13th Amendment, Lincoln knew it would not be enough. So, at the end of the Civil War, the amendment was introduced. In 1864, the Senate passed the Amendment, but the House had not. In 1865, however, the House finally passed the Amendment. After that, the 13th Amendment finally became part of the U.S government.
Source: OurDocuments.gov

The Ku Klux Klan, or KKK, was founded in 1865 by a man named Nathan Bedford Forrest (pictured below). The KKK's goal was to be a vehicle of white southern opposition to the Reconstruction Era, which was a time of establishing political and economic rights for blacks. Many of the KKK's opposition efforts included intimidation towards black voters and violence towards black and white leaders. However, one of their most known acts was the act of lynching blacks, or hanging blacks. Their goal of white supremacy was eventually met due to Democratic victories in the South in the 1870s.
Source: History.com
