Society has created a socially excepted "beautiful woman" and "handsome man". What makes a woman and man attractive according to society? Symmetry has been thought to be a key factor in defining a person's attractiveness. Studies show that bilateral symmetry is an attractive feature. Faces aren't the only thing that can be physically attractive through symmetry - studies show that people with higher symmetry in hands, ankles, wrists, elbows, and ears have more sex partners than a person with less symmetry. Attraction to symmetry may be a subconscious ideology in which people may not realize they are partaking in.

Average or composite faces have been revealed in studies to be an attractive feature. This could be because average faces are synonymous with genetic health, or that society is more attracted to people that are "normal". In traditional beauty standards, attractive men have square jaws with pronounced eyebrows, and attractive women have high cheekbones with large lips and eyes.

In women whose waist-to-hip ratios of about 0.7 were rated healthier, more youthful, and to have higher reproductive capacity by men. In opposition to women's bodies, men's bodies are measured in waist-to-shoulders ratio. With a ratio of between 0.70 and 0.75, most women find this attractive. Such high ratios can indicate physical strength. These preferences occur on a subconscious level through both genetic and societal influences.

A scar provides unique insight to a person's life experiences. They heal but never go away, and stay as a reminder that time will pass and trauma will heal. Some people find scars physically attractive - but why? Studies show that scars are a sign of bravery, strength, and a mysterious character.
