I am unlearning the idea that everything needs to be formally assessed... I am having students do science for science not for the test.

Challenges include students who "demand" grades, parents who "demand" good grades, and all the crazy standardized testing out there.

I am relearning that targeted, short PD can carry a big impact for the learner.

Challenges include reeducating administrators who want traditional presentation style PD that no one will remember or use.

I am unlearning that teaching is a checklist of skills that must be ticked off as students "master" skills. I am relearning that good teaching reintroduces skills over and over again in a cyclical way throughout the year through project-based learning so that students have more opportunities to be exposed to skills multiple times.

In the words of Will Richardson: "We need to unlearn the idea that we are the sole content experts in the classroom, because we can now connect our kids to people who know far more than we do about the material we’re teaching." The challenges involve learning to be a facilitator using new technology - sifting through the scores of available resources, and learning to use them effectively to keep students engaged.

I have to unlearn the teacher centered classroom. I have to relearn to let students take control and how to use technology to accomplish true engagement. My own need to control and correct have always been a challenge. Content standards and course expectations are another problem. The required test at the end is often at odds with a student centered classroom.

I have to unlearn the concept that learning only happens at a desk or within the four walls of a classroom, and relearn that almost any experience has the potential for learning.
Along the way I may have to discard (or at least file away) some of the things that worked in the past to make room for new ideas.
