BEVERLY: "The facts are: My wife takes pills and I drink. And these facts have over time made burdensome the maintenance of traditional American routine: paying of bills, purchase of goods, cleaning of clothes or carpets or crappers. Rather than once more assume the mantle of guilt … vow abstinence with my fingers crossed in the queasy hope of righting our ship, I’ve chosen to turn my life over to a Higher Power … and join the ranks of the Hiring Class " (Letts, 1774).

Significance Of Quote 5

This quote is important because it signifies the end for Violet. After everything Violet has done, everyone in her family ends up leaving. It is surprising that after all the family leaves, she crawls up the stairs to Johnna and ends up in her arms. After calling her names throughout the entire play, she begins to have maybe a slight bit a sympathy realizing that it will just be her and Johnna for a long time. Violet comes to a realization that nothing she can do now can change what has happened.

This quote is important because it shows an underlying problem between Beverly and Violets relationship. Violet was no stranger to this idea either. It was no suprise that Beverly descides to leave her. This shows that things for Violet are allready in shambles and it is very unlikely that things will get better as time goes on.

This quote is significant because it shows that Violet is hurt. Violet ends up breaking down and she clearly is having emotional problems, getting mouth cancer and her own kids are not there to help her when she needs the the most. This pushed Barbra to breaking point where she began to decieve her doctor to get more pills which fueled her allready strong addiction to drugs. This quote also shows a fundemental distrust in the family, as Violet is unable to ask Barbra for help with her addiction. She just brushes it off saying she isn't hooked on anything.

Violets use of Drugs and its effect on her family

One thing that stood out in this article was.

"People who use drugs don’t see the damage and hurt they’re causing others. The whole family is affected. It hurts the family dynamics and disrupts the stability of the household."

This is 100% true in Violets case. As we can see, her use and addiction to drugs has destroyed the relationship she had with her family eventually leading everyone to leave her.

This is a major turning point in Violets characterization. At this point in the play, Violet gives up on all hope on restoring he relationship with her family. From quote 2 we see that Violet denies being addicted to drugs but now she openly admits to being addicted, a big change. The line, "Y’see these little blue babies? These are my best fucking friends and they never let me down" really shows how much distrust is in the family as Violet trusts the pills more than her own daughter (Letta, 1799).

At this point, Violet has cut the last straw between her and Barbara. It's almost as if Violet has gone mad in these lines saying that nobody is stronger than me. On the otherhand, it is also a final cry for help as Violet says "When nothing is left, when everything is gone and dissappeared, I'll be here" (Letta, 1810). Violet is obviously arguing with Barbara but I think that deep down Violet is just lonley and wants everything to go back to normal, but her addiction to drugs is bringing her down and she can't help herself but make things worse.
