City Parks and Urban Forests feedback 04/13/21 by Vanessa Vales-Lewis

Co-Teach presentations are graded based on the Danielson Rubric Domain 3 Instruction, Competency 3c, and 3d: Engaging Students in Learning and Assessment. Let's offer our colleagues feedback on their presentations for the evening. Feedback should include ways in which improvements can be made for the final unit plan and lesson plan submission.

Yasalenny was great! Pretending to be a kindergartener was fun. She was super engaging and made us all feel welcomed. When she started her lesson by asking us how we were feeling was nice too.

Barbara was great! Very engaging and showed many songs to help us remember our vocabulary words. Also, it is very nice to have a virtual field trip because sometimes when you want to take your students on a trip, the budget may not be enough.

Thank you both.

Great lesson.
Especially the level of engagement. It would be a challenge to engage those so young, but there were several opportunities for them to get involved from saying the words together to playing games and dancing at the end. Love the graphics. Rich and full to bring in the students eyes. Great tone in teaching. Not stern or angry or mean. That is comforting especially for students that age.
Grows. I am concerned about having to bring that depth of knowledge and excitement day after day. Could cause some burnout.

I can say first hand I never knew the amount of energy and interaction needed for kindergarten. Love the graphics and book that was used for this lesson. The tone was so welcoming and provided such a safe place for students. Taking temperature checks was nice as well since it gives you an idea of what is the current status in the classroom.

Ms. Peralta you did an amazing job. Your lesson was very fun yet informative. Especially working with Kindergartens and trying to keep their attentions I love how you used movement to help the students remember certain words and parts of a tree. At the end the students were able to have a dance party still learning the words that describe parts of a tree. Great Job!

I loved how fun and interactive your lesson plan was. It was very informative, even as an adult...I was reminded of words, like deciduous, so, thank you!. It was so fun and you had instant proof that it was actually educational with Ashraf’s son joining in. I liked how you had several different forms of interaction....book reading, drawing, memory game, dancing...very cool. I loved it, great job.

AMAZING work Barbara!!

I really thought your lesson was also extremely fun and engaging. The virtual tour to the park was fantastic. You could actually make a little series of virtual park visits and focus one sense for each virtual park. Like for instance the Prospect Park Zoo, you can focus on touch, because that goat you saw is in their petting zoo section...I live 2 blocks from Prospect Park, I go all the time. I thought you and your co-teacher worked really seamlessly together.

I am a nervous Nelly for Adam’s critiques on my lesson....

The virtual trip was very well done. Who knew there were so many things in the park. This was especially beneficial to young students who many not have had a chance to see the many urban forests right outside their door. I think it raises their interest level to go.
It was a bit leap to combine the two subject topics: the 5 senses along with the science content. It blended well with the virtual trip to the park.
Grow
The last assignment may be too much for the young students to understand and follow. Plus for having an activity for those students who finished early.

I really like the way you teach the children and how you look enthusiastic about the content. Also the way you were able to involve several apps in the lesson in a way it looked like one unit, I did not feel it was interrupted or cut when you move from one app to another. Fabulous work. Thank you for having Adam too.

I also love how you taught the lesson and incorporated them into an activity. Also the songs and activities kept the students engaged and it was entertaining and educational. I also love when you taught the 5 senses you made sure to teach the class about it and how we could use it outside of school when you took us on a virtual field trip. I know for kindergarten students this is something they will talk about when they go home and they’ll remember this. I love the lesson and I think you ladies did a great job. Congrats.

The teachers very enegertic and ethusiastic, which is necessary in engaging Kindergartners. I also like that they included a vocabulary list and that their lessons had a lot of visuals, especially with the Virtual trip to Prospect Park.
One thing that can be improved is the length of the lesson. The lessons are too lengthy to sustain the short attention span of Kindergartners.

My Self-Reflection on my and Yasalenny's Co-Teach Presentation on City Parks/Urban Forests

It was fun to prepare for these 2 lessons and to also prepare for our co-teaching presentation. However, it was a lot of work to plan the activities/assessments, to make our presentation engaging and welcoming for our intended audience which are Kindergarteners, while also keeping in mind our overall topic for our unit which is city parks/urban forests.
As I reflect on my and Yasalenny's lessons and co-teach presentation, here is my glow and grow.
Glow: I think we both did a great job with engaging many of you with our use of visuals, songs, opportunities to move our bodies a bit by dancing or pointing to our eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and fingers for the purpose of engagement and learning of the content in the lessons. I think keeping all students engaged is important so that they are able to participate in the lesson and learn. Younger students especially need to be engaged as their attention span is usually less than that of an older student. Keeping them engaged with visuals and different types of activities can help keep their focus in the lesson and therefore they are likely to learn the content of the lessons and meet the objectives of each lesson.
Grow: I think we had a lot of material to cover in both lessons. Thinking about the actual time we would have with Kindergarteners in the classroom during a science period which is typically about 45 minutes, I think we can look for ways to shorten the lessons by covering part of the material in each lesson in one class period and maybe the rest another class period. Kindergarteners usually need more time to work on and complete an activity or task, so I think considering to parts of each individual lesson and expanding the length of the lessons to cover all the material can help make our lessons and overall unit stronger because we know our students would be getting enough time to process the information they just learned while also working and completing their work with enough time.
Thank you all again for your wonderful feedback, and thank you Ashraf for allowing your son to be part of my and Yasalenny's co-teach presentation. He was great! It definitely helped us gain perspective on how effective our 2 lessons were.
Thank you,
Barbara
