Ma become a English Teacher before he build his own business platform. 
Since at young age, he keep on gathering knowledge about English and tried his best to communicate better in that language. Ma joined the Hangzhou Teacher's Training Institute to pursue a Bachelor's degree in English and graduated from the institution on 1988.

On 1995, his proficiency in English enable him to get a part time as an interpreter for Chinese and American businessman. He encountered his first computer and the internet during a visit to his friend's house in Seattle.  With his friend's help, he created a home page for his translation business the next day and receive five responses. Ma returned to China and started China Pages, a business that established websites for small business. Then he took a government job where he met a first-time visitor to China, Jerry Yang, the co-founder of Yahoo.

1999, Ma started Alibaba.com, a business-to-business marketplace, backed by $60,000 from 18 co-founders.

On 2002, Alibaba.com reached 1 million users in 2002. He decided to replicate the success with China's consumers by building Taobao.com, a retail site, followed by an online payment platform called Alipay.

To help build the business, Ma sought an internet search engine partner and was contacted by Yang. On 2005, Yahoo bought a 40 percent stake in closely held Alibaba Group for $1 billion. Yahoo's business was being eroded by the ascendancy of Google, while Alibaba dominated China's e-commerce sphere. Ma tried and failed to buy back the back the stake from Yahoo an even considered buying Yahoo outright. 

On 2011, in order to secure an operating license for online payment, Ma transferred Alipay from Alibaba Group to a closely held company under his control.

2012, Ma pay Yahoo $7.1 billion for its 20 percent stake in Alibaba plus royalties for as long as four years.

2013, Ma stepped down as Alibaba Group CEO, remain as chairman.

On 2014, Alipay has more than 800 million registered users. Its mobile application has 190 million active users and handles 45 millions transactions a day.

🏆 2009 Ma secured a spot in 'Time' magazine's list of 'World's 100 Most Influential People'. Other than that, the internet giant also received the '2009 CCTV Economic Person of the Year: Business Leader of the Decade Award'

🏆2014,  Forbes magazine had named him as the 30th most powerful person in the world.

🏆2015,  At the 'Asian Award', he was felicitated with the 'Entrepreneur of the year' award. According to Forbes, Jack's net worth was estimated to be around $27 billion.

🏆 2017, Fortune ranked Ma second on its World's 50 Greatest Leaders list.
