I have always known that translation is never truly easy, due to multiple factors like cultural difference. However, I did not know that translation does not necessarily needs to carry the same sentiment as the original text, rather just the essence of it. Furthermore, the deep research that has been done in translation. Today, I also learnt that they are three types of translation and sign language translation is one of them. With how fast technology is advancing, it has also taken root in translation especially with how fast and efficient it can be. Thus, it raises the question; if translation would strictly be taken by technology. While translation only considered the essence of the source, if the source text is cultural, can it really carry the same meaning ? Even if it can, what if it does not truly aligned with the practical usage of the translation? Moving on, I hope the use of technology in translation would still be supervised by human to avoid mistranslation and misinterpretations. With that said, I am looking forward to learn more in this course as someone who has encountered some issues when it comes to translating local languages to other languages.

Before the first class of this course, I knew that translation is the act of translating from one language to another, and the context of the contents being translated is crucial to convey the right meaning of the content delivered.

However, upon taking the class I was exposed to a wider meaning of translation and interpretation. I have learned that there are source text and source language and target text and target language. I have also learned that translation does not necessarily mean translating one language to another language. Changing one source text to another style of text is also considered as translating even if using the same language. I have learned also that the essence of the context is an important point to consider when translating and it does not need to be translated with the same word-by-word translation. Even if the translation is in simple sentences, it is still acceptable as long the essence of the content is there.

As of today, I am much more excited to understand the difference between translation and interpretation and to learn the acceptable translation.
