Any plant or animal product is full of DNA that our body readily digests, messing with one or two genes isn't going to impact human health.

Potential allergenicity to the novel gene product is another commonly expressed concern. Allergies to non-GM foods such as soft fleshed fruit, potatoes and soy are widespread. Clearly, new varieties of crops produced by either GM techniques or conventional breeding both have the potential to be allergenic. Concern surrounding this topic relates to two factors; the possibility that genes from known allergens may be inserted into crops not typically associated with allergenicity and the possibility of creating new, unknown allergens by either inserting novel genes into crops or changing the expression of endogenous proteins.

Assessment of the allergenic potential of compounds is problematic and a number of different bodies have produced guidelines and decision trees to experimentally evaluate allergenic potential.41–43 These are effective at assessing compounds which may prove to be hazardous through a hierarchical approach which includes determining whether the source of the introduced gene is from an allergenic plant, whether GM foods react with antibodies in the sera of patients with known allergies and whether the product encoded by the new gene has similar properties to known allergens. Finally, they carried out histopathology and again found no differences in the stomach, liver, heart, kidney, spleen, or reproductive organs of GMO versus non-GMO fed rats. Despite massive ingestion of GMO potato, tomato, or sweet pepper, these studies demonstrated no differences in the vitality or health of the animals, even at the microscopic level (Megan L. Lorris 2015).

This shows that even after rats were fed 7,000 times the average human daily consumption of GMO tomatoes, they exhibited no symptoms. This means that there is probably no amount of GMO eating that will hurt the body, if 7,000 times the average human daily consumption did not affect rats.

National Institute of Toxicological Research in Seoul, Korea fed rats diets containing either GMO potato or non-GMO potato [6]. For each diet, they tracked male and female rats. To carefully analyze the rats’ health, a histopathological examination of tissues and organs was conducted after the rats died. Histopathology is the examination of organs for disease at the microscopic level (think pathologist doing a biopsy). Histopathological examinations of the reproductive organs, liver, kidneys, and spleen showed no differences between GMO-eating and non-GMO-eating animals (Megan L. Lorris, 2015).

As GM crops contain DNA and RNA just as all other foods do, the consumption of GM crops should not be any more dangerous than consuming unmodified crops. Safety assessments also check that proteins produced in GM crops are not toxic if there is an unintentional transgene that is absorbed by a host. As a result, it can be determined that GMOs are not too new for us to know if they are dangerous because we have developed methods to ensure that the GM crops entering the market are safe.
