The sound of Big Ben echoes while Clarissa thinks about Septimus' death. "One, two, three" just like the English tradition of ringing church bell three times before and after the death of a Christian, Big Ben's sound almost functions like a death knell. Also, it reminds me of using bell in Buddhist services and rituals whose sound "is considered auspicious, and is believed to bring peace and comfort to all sentient beings, even those who are suffering in hell."

Also, it reminds me of my favorite prose...😊

By looking at the old lady going to bed, I think Clarissa accepts the reality of death, just as a cycle of life. Life goes on. Nothing crazy happens. For an atheist, there's no God to judge the sin of suicide. Just like the old lady voluntarily moves her hand to turn off the light, one can also turn off the switch of his life... simple as that. There's no need for fear or pity since one's spirit might come back like a float of dust and dwell with us.

"It ended in a transcendental theory which, with her horror of death, allowed her to believe, or say that she believed (for all her scepticism), that since our apparitions, the part of us which appears, are so momentary compared with the other, the unseen part of us, which spreads wide, the unseen might survive, be recovered somehow attached to this person or that, or even haunting certain places, after death. After overcoming the horror of death, Clarissa can fully embrace her life and go back to her beloved friends.

Miss Kilman has a sweet tooth. Eating sweet desserts is the only time she allows herself for indulgence and pleasure. I think this shows Miss Kilman's repressed desire for romantic love and to be loved by people in general. I felt genuinely sorry for Miss Kilman. What could an ugly, poor woman possibly do to be loved and welcomed other than rely on a religion?
