As we grow older and learn more and more things, understanding more and more perspectives, our viewpoints/values/opinions change and develop to fit the situation, atmosphere, and timeframe we live in. To understand others varying viewpoints we must change our values and choices to match those of the person/character we are relating to. We must transport ourselves to that place, and that time, and that culture to really connect and further develop understanding and hypothesizing of what else they might mean. Our own eyes can't be trusted because they never lived as those they are reading about have lived, we have to see through the eyes or the narrator.
