In Lincolns "House Divided Speech" the words and phrases he used in his speech help us figure out the tone. The tone helps us understand what way Lincoln wanted us to hear his speech. A word that effects the tone is the word "agitation". Agitation helps him sound strong and confident with his opinion towards slavery. In paragraph 3, it states, " We are now far into the fifth year, since policy was initiated, with the avowed object, and confident promise, of putting an end to slavery agitation". This shows that Lincoln was very thorough and straight forward in what he had to say against slavery. The word "Union" in stanza 8 also brings back the idea that we are all together, and we are one nation, that is united. How these strong and confident words add to the effect it has on the tone of Lincolns speech is by giving his message power and meaning. For example, "I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free" (Paragraph 7). This piece of evidence shows that Lincoln is again confident in his beliefs and opinions. And this speech is so the nation improves, and is unified, so we don't become broken apart and divided. Every human should be treated equally, and be given freedom to anything and everything. And no one should be separated, categorized, or mistreated by the act of slavery.

Abraham Lincoln is strong and stern in his opinion of slavery. He leaves no room for argument or it makes you think twice about his opinion. The quote, "A house divided against itself cannot stand" in stanza 3 takes a strong step forward of a declaration of Honest Abe's opinion.
Stanza 7 it states, "I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free."(Abraham Lincoln). This quote is clear and straight forward of what will happen if we do not be united together as a whole country acting in one voice. So, by referring to the divide government by saying "Union" , it's clear of who is in trouble of what is to come for if we stay on the path of division.
In the end, we are at the edge of our seats because of declaration but the people relax a little bit when he reassures us by saying, "It will become all one thing or all the other." (stanza 9). So, we will either have slaves in daily life, or we will all be a free people just as we wanted while declaring our independence from England.

In Abraham's "House Divided Speech" he speaks about how slavery is not something to be proud of and should be gone. In the beginning of his speech he comes on strong and confident with what he believes in. In paragraph 3, he uses the word Agitation to make his claim more powerful and get peoples attention. He explains through this word how he feels about slavery. Paragraph 6 has the phrase, " A house divided against itself cannot stand" (Abraham Lincoln). This phrase grabs the audiences attention and has them realize the trouble of slavery and what it will do to our nation if it is not stopped. The tone of this speech effects the language as well because if there is bold vocabulary then the speech will seem bold and powerful. If the vocabulary is simple then the presenter will not seem so confident in their work. Through Abraham Lincoln using words such as Agitation, Policy, and Advocates it creates the speech to sound very formal. It states in paragraph 8, " I do not expect the Union to be dissolved-I do not expect the house to fall-but I do expect it will cease to be divided" (Abraham Lincoln). In this quote Lincoln explains why slavery is a bad issue and what will be the result if we do something about it. As you can see Abraham's tone and vocabulary was a very big impact on his speech.

Abraham Lincoln used formal language in his "House Divided Speech" to change his tone. In his speech, he says, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." This shows that his tone changes because he uses formal language. His tone would be different if he said "our government isn't good right now." He also says, "I believe this government cannot endure." When you hear this, you respect him because of his formal words. If he wasn't so formal, he wouldn't be as believable and his tone would be different. It wouldn't sound as determined and passionate.

Abraham Lincoln is commonly known as honest Abe. He is not only truthful, but openly expressive of his beliefs. In his memorable address titled the "House Divided Speech" depicts his strong opinions about slavery and the lack of unity. His words carry power and formality, an appropriate combination to sway audiences to believing him. In the first lines of his speech, Lincoln voices his viewpoint of division by skillfully saying, "A house divided against itself cannot stand" (Lincoln, 6). Not only does this line create a concrete phrase for the rest of his speech, but it displays his compassion and belief that nothing can survive while quarreling with itself. This fact can relate to people, animals, businesses, and countries. Lincoln uses this powerful, yet brief quote to further grab the attention of his peers, adding to his opinion's affect. Another short statement appears in measure 9 when he confidently states, "It will become all one thing or all the other" (Lincoln, 9). Lincoln explains that the country cannot be fighting against itself with negative choices and positive ones. All mindsets must go towards a a better society and economy. His strongly crafted sentences mark sharp, identifiable points in his elaborate opinion. Lincoln uses the simplicity in his phrases to truly show people what needs to happen. Unity is crucial, and the riddance of separation should be what drives even the idea of slavery from American spirits. With his unwavering confidence, sureness, and intelligence, Lincoln is able to shape his speech into something well-known and memorable. Using his gift of speaking and sharing his opinions, Lincoln was able to change minds.

Abraham Lincoln's House Divided Speech uses many formal words that contributed to the powerful tone of his speech about how the government should not be separated on opinions. One example of his strong words and tone is on paragraph 5 of his speech, where it states, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." This makes the audience think twice about their opinion over slavery. The effect of the tone because of the word choice Lincoln uses impacts the audience and readers immensely. Once example of this in Lincoln's speech is on paragraph 8, where it states, "I do not expect the Union to be dissolved-I do not expect the house to fall- but I do expect it will cease to be divided." This impacts the audience that Lincoln spoke to because he basically told that the government will- one way or another- not be divided anymore. To conclude, Abraham Lincoln's speech was written to impact his audience and make them think about the bigger picture for the government.

Abraham Lincoln is known for his amazing language skills and use of that talent in his speeches. Specifically, Lincoln uses a formal and serious tone in his "House Divided" Speech. Some words that show this tone of his are 'ceased' and 'augmented', which are both found in paragraph 5. 'Ceased' usually has a negative connotation and is used in formal addresses, making the word accentuate the tone. 'Augmented' is a word that is educational sounding, which also helps the tone become formal.
The language directly affects the tone because tone is how something comes off to a reader or viewer. If someone says short simple words, they come off as less educated or knowledgeable as someone who would use big words. Also, language can make someone feel a feeling the author or viewer wants them to feel. If the author uses serious words, making a serious tone, then the reader will take the tone as serious and interpret it in a way that the author wanted. Abe is using this to his advantage to persuade and inform the delegates about the major future conflict that slavery will cause that is inevitable.

In Abraham Lincoln's speech, House Divided, he uses formal language which leaves a very strong and powerful effect on his tone to help convey his point across to his audience. Early in his speech he says, "We are now far into the fifth year, since a policy was initiated, with the avowed object, and confident promise, of putting an end to slavery agitation." Lincoln uses the word "agitation" following the word "slavery" to show his outlook on the problem. He is conveying slavery as a negative thing to help people fully understand just how bad the issue is. By bringing up how much slavery has hurt and agitated people, more and more will want to help begin to end it. He also says, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." By pointing out how no divided organization can succeed by working against itself and applying this to the country's government, shows his audience just how much it will take for everyone to come together and work to end the issue of slavery as a whole. All in all, Lincoln's choice of words effects his tone in a powerful way that catches his audiences' attention.

Abraham Lincoln is admired for his works in office, as well as how he brought freedom to the many slaves in America. In the year of 1858, Mr.Lincoln delivered his popular speech, "House Divided," to an exceptional amount of delegates, targeting the division between the house's in the north and south. Abraham Lincoln strongly declares his speech, which gives him a confident and knowledgeable tone. According to Lincoln's speech, "I do not expect the house to fall- but I do expect it will cease to be divided" (Lincoln, 8) By using the word cease, it shows the reader and delegates that he knew what he was talking, and that he was truly warning us. Also, the word 'cease' gives him a very formal tone. Lastly, "We shall not fail" (Lincoln, 17) This shows the delegates that he wants our government to succeed.

In Abraham Lincolns "House Divided" speech, Lincoln discusses the problems of having a divided house. He mainly focuses on the huge issue of slavery. He emphasizes his point and is very direct. In my opinion, Abraham Lincolns tone is very firm. He makes sure to represent his point and show authority. In paragraph 8, Lincoln states, "I do not expect the Union to be dissolved...I do not expect the house to fall... but I do expect it will cease to be divided" (Lincoln, 8). This states that he was not using small words such as "I think that this will happen but this will not happen", he used words that made him seem knowledgeable and intelligent. This made him seem educated in his case and point. This authority could make people second guess what they thought was true because it is always easier to believe someone if they seem to know what they are doing. In paragraph 6, Lincoln also states, "A house divided against itself cannot stand" (Lincoln, 6). This is another great piece of evidence because it states his main point all in one sentence. It is the main idea of the entire speech. A household of people who cannot agree on anything will not function properly. In this case, not functioning properly could be a big deal to all of the country. Overall, the direct tone Lincoln uses and the importance he gives his point causes the speech to seem crucial to slavery.

Abraham Lincoln's speech, "House Divided" contains wording that gives off the tone and effect that Lincoln knows exactly what he's doing and if we follow him we will rise up as a nation, free from tension and succeed in the Civil War. "...sooner or later the victory is sure to come." (Lincoln, 18) this evidence shows Lincoln is sure that we will win , even if it takes time or we don't do so well at first, we will win. This shows the determination Lincoln has and how confident he is in the country under his own leadership. "Of strange, discordant, and even, hostile elements, we gathered from the four winds, and formed and fought the battle through.." (Lincoln, 15) here Lincoln is saying that we've been through this situation before and we have nothing to fear as we are still standing here today. Lincoln is showing excellent leadership by reminding his nation that we can fight through this battle because we've done it before and because of the experience we can do it again. Overall, Lincoln's speech gave off the tone that he's a confident leader and he puts faith and trust into his country.

This shows how Lincoln discusses standing firm, and staying serious. The wording he uses gives off the idea that he knew how and what he was doing. Another quote that gives off a serious and firm tone is found in paragraph 4, Lincoln states,"Under the operation of that policy, that agitation has not only, not ceased, but has constantly augmented." This is another key example of the seriousness in Abraham Lincoln's "House Divided" speech because it shows his knowledge of the topic and how serious he is about it

Abraham Lincoln's "House Divided Speech" contains many different types of formal language. These words or phrases help to strengthen Lincoln's serious and dire tone. For example, Lincoln had stated in his speech, "' A house divided against itself cannot stand'"(6). Lincoln reminds his listeners that if the immediate crisis between the country's people is not handled, the country will not be able to survive. Lincoln also said, " Either the opponents of slavery, will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new - North as well as South" (10). Abraham Lincoln also emphasizes the fact that there are only two ways that this situation being handled. Either slavery, which Lincoln is against, shall end, or it's ideals are instead spread across the country on both sides.

This formal language shows how serious and determined he is to get his point across. Evidence from his speech states, "Under the operation of that policy, that agitation has not only, not ceased, but has constantly augmented." (Lincoln, P4) Using larger words leads people to believe that he is an intelligent, noble leader and his opinions are trustworthy. His trustworthy tone leads people to clearly see his views, and how much they mean to him. Evidence from the text states, "A house divided against itself cannot stand."(Lincoln, P6) Lincoln's ton was overall welcoming and straight forward, and people will definitely be persuaded by him.

For example he states "We are now far into the fifth year, since policy was intiated, with the avowed object, and confident promise, of putting an end to slavery" (Lincoln, 3). This line in his speech gets his point across while using more formal words. Another example is when he states " Under the operation of that policy, that agitation has not only, not ceased, but has constantly augmented" (Lincoln, 4).

In this speech, strongly worded phrases are used to get a point across. An example of this is paragraph six. Lincoln states, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." In this speech he intends to strongly convey a message. What he means is that the nation is divided because of slavery and its not going to help anyone. He believes that this could potentially destroy their country. Another important point made in this speech was in paragraph three. Lincoln says, "We are now far into the fifth year, since a policy was initiated, with the avowed object and confident promise, of putting an end to slavery agitation." In this he is talking about how slavery has been going on for way too long, and he wants to finally end it.

this picture relates to the topic at hand because miley cyrus is very serious about this.

Lincoln''s speech "House Divided Speech", Lincoln was able to compel the reader by making strong statements to the reader. One example of this is in paragraph 6, it states,"A house divided against itself cannot stand "(Lincoln,6). In this paragraph, Lincoln makes a more serious tone and make the statement sound more serious and more urgent. Later in the speech Lincoln comes off as very stern and formal making sure that his points are being made. For example, in paragraph 17 it states," The result is not doubtful. We shall not fail-- if we stand firm, we shall not fail"(Lincoln,17). Moreover, Lincoln makes sure that his point is made.

Formal language makes a big difference in making out specific messages or meaning in ones writing. The tone of Abraham Lincoln's speech has a very serious, direct, and bold tone. He is not afraid to state his opinion even if it is not a very popular one. '' In my opinion, it will not cease, until a crisis shall have been reached, and passed" (Lincoln, 5). The tone has a great effect on the readers or people listening to the speech. They want to hear what the speaker has to say, resulting great benefits for Lincoln overall. Since Lincoln's opinion and claims is not very popular, he uses formal language and thinking outside the box to create a very bold tone and make people reconsider wanting to not support the republicans and their president. For example, " If we could first know where we are, and wither we are tending, we could better judge what to do, and how to do it" (Lincoln, 2).

(Lincoln, 7) This conveys that his reasoning explained with his strong belief in his speech. Also he stated, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." (Lincoln, 6) This shows us that his tone is strongly stated because there was no hesitance in-between his words. The effect of the language on the tone would be how it made people cease their tension before the start of the Civil War because Abraham Lincoln stated his words boldly. The picture below shows Abraham Lincoln being serious and has strong thinking when it comes to speaking his mind when he spoke his speech.

In Abraham Lincoln's "House Divided Speech" many uses of formal language is used to create a serious tone. "I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free" (Lincoln 7). The government is divided into those who agree with slavery and those who are simply against it. "Under the operation of that policy, that agitation has not only, not ceases, but has constantly augmented" (Lincoln 4). Slavery has already been a big problem, but as of now it has grew into something bigger. His tone of speech showed that he was being serious and wanted people to consider the cons of slavery and why people shouldn't do such things to others.

In this speech, Abraham Lincoln used very powerful words. He had a very confident and serious tone. A piece of evidence from the speech is: "A house divided against itself cannot stand." (Lincoln, 6) This quote shows that he has very strong feelings about ending slavery. Another line from his speech, "It will become all one thing or all the other." (Lincoln, 9) This explains that the North and South can't keep living in disagreement. They have to come together and make a decision, otherwise everything will fall apart. This type of language effects the tone. The type of words Lincoln uses make people think twice about their opinion on slavery. This is a very convincing speech to help end the use of slaves in the South.

Abraham Lincoln's "House Divided" speech had a very serious, straight forward and formal tone. This is seen all throughout the speech and is very obvious. An example of this is in the speech when Lincoln used the words "slavery agitation"(paragraph 3). This is very straight forward because it is stating what Lincoln is trying to convey about his thoughts of ending slavery with only a few formal words. This also overall affects the tone of the writing because it makes the audience member listen intently on the important information being formally conveyed. Another example is when the speech stated "A house divided against itself cannot stand"(paragraph 6). The statement shows how Lincoln is talking formally bringing up the consequenced of having slavery. He is showing the audience a picture of how it is going to be in the future if slavery doesn't end. Therefore, is affects the audience member by making them think that Lincoln knows what he is talking about and what he wants to do about it which comes across very strong throughout the speech. All in all Lincoln's tone in his speech "House Divided" was very straight forward, serious, and formal.

Lincoln uses words such agitation to show his reader that he is informed with what he is doing. ( para 3) The words said in his speech sets a tone that gave authority and showed that he was serious. Without the words his speech would not draw the readers attention and would not become a conflict. For example, Abraham says "A house divided against itself cannot stand". (para 6) This appeals to the listeners and the readers for Abraham put thought into his speech with shows that this topic is near and dear to his heart.Without the tone set within the speech the men and women of the listeners would believe that he did not put much thought into what he wrote.

But he also has a very inspirational type of speech later on. He states many powerful things such as, "...We shall not fail-if we stand firm, we shall not fail.(17 Lincoln)" This is very powerful on his part. Just by Abe Lincoln using different tones of speech you can clearly tell that he means what he is saying. He is also talking with a firm voice for a reason and also sometimes using an inspirational type voice, to hopefully inspire people with his reasons.

In my opinion, the formal language used in Abraham Lincoln's speech, "House Divided", creates a tone that is very confident and direct. Abraham does not seem to be afraid of the backlash his speech might cause and instead is very direct and blunt with what he believes. "In my opinion, it will not cease, until a crisis shall have been reached, and passed" (Lincoln, 5). This quote shows how Lincoln says his beliefs directly without sugar coating it to be in favor of those who may oppose. One can believe Lincoln did this so people would get the raw truth instead of a pretty lie. "Either the opponents of slavery, will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new--North as well as South" (Lincoln, 10). This quote from Abraham Lincolns speech also shows the direct tone Lincoln uses. As he supports his beliefs with the mostly likely outcome, he also puts a sense of confidence into his tone and continues to lack sugar coating of any sort. All in all, in the speech "House Divided" by Abraham Lincoln, the tone Lincoln uses is that of directness, bluntness, and confidence.
