At six years old, he and his family moved to Germany, where he received prestigious education. He returned home to the states in 1952 where he began work as a graphic designer for an advertising agency. He claimed the ladder at the company and eventually took on the title of art director.

His work in children's literature began with a phone call from Bill Martin Jr, who had seen his graphic design work and requested his help in illustrating a children's book. Carle's style was sophisticated, beautiful, and unique, built by his proper art education mixed with whimsy elements that bring the designs to life. This sparked Carle's career, as he continued illustrating he started writing his own stories. His most well-known book, and commonly thought to be his first book, is the Very Hungry Caterpillar. But, there was actually one book before it, called 1, 2, 3, to the Zoo. He went on to write 70 total illustrated children's books. Most of his books share his love and fascination with living things and nature. He has been nicknamed the "Picture Writer" because of the dimension added to his books from his striking, expressive illustrations.

Eric passed away on May 23, 2021, in Northhampton, Massachusets at the age of 91 years old.
