Many people don't know or care about the importance of researching their families health history. I think the mindset of "oh that won't happen to me" is too commonly held by many people today. I think many people also believe that if they live a "healthy lifestyle" that they are inept to the risk of diseases. With my families health history, I have chosen to remain in tune and in the loop with the particular diseases that have touched my family.

In regard to the outcome of my risk snapshot, I can agree with all of the outcomes of my risks except for the average risk of breast cancer.
After my grandmother passed away the women in my family all chose to receive the genetic testing offered by our local woman's health clinic.
According to the doctors there I was told i have an above average risk of breast cancer in my life. The results of my genetic tests came back good but there was one mutation in my DNA.
The mutation was on the BARD1 allele. This is the first allele on the BRCA1 gene. Though I do not have a direct mutation on my BRCA1 gene, the mutation on a BARD1 allele does have some correlation to breast cancer. In the most recent studies it has been found that women with a BARD1 mutation do have a direct link to breast cancer. The information found on this allele is very new that not much information has been put out about it.
Attached is a quick link with a simplified description of the BARD1 gene.

There are many health related factors and lifestyle factors that I posses that can and have helped reduce my risk for diseases.

I am an active person that incorporates exercise into my weekly routine.
Though I do not eat much of fruits and veggies, I do eat what I consider to be a healthy diet, low in fats, sugars and excessive carbs.

I have quit smoking and have remained cigarette free for 4 years now.
I also have taken daily multivitamins for the last year now.

With the knowledge I have of my disease risks, I have and will continue to remain in contact with my primary care physician to talk about preventative measures I can take to continue minimizing my health risks.

I believe my above average risk for lung cancer is high due to my past experience of smoking. I began smoking at the age of 14 but had quit and the age of 20. I have remained some free since I have quit though.

I believe the high risk for colon cancer is actually wrong because nobody in my direct family has passed away from colon cancer and I believe the result of that risk came from an error in one of my answers on the assessment.

As I stated before, I know I have an above average risk for breast cancer due to my long family history as well a direct link to a mutation in my own DNA.
In regard to my risk for stroke, heart disease and diabetes, I have no genetic link to these except for heart disease. I believe my risk for these diseases is low because of the lack of link I have to them, as well as the preventative lifestyle I live.
