Consider the text in students’ hands, specifically the section they will be reading today.

Are there forms of bias in this text?
If yes, so now what?

Linguistic bias- students may not have been exposed to how the text is structured as poetry and a diary from Jack's perspective. In addition, the vocabulary in some poems might be outside of students' background knowledge.

Visibility bias- all of the poets Jack is introduced to throughout the story except two are white males, would be more inclusive to include a variety of ethnicities and genders.

Fragmentation: Perspectives of striking workers, there is a little bit of knowledge is touched upon. The story is focused on Esperanza but the perspectives of those she interacts with like landowners, workers, are only shown in one sided fashions.

Imbalance: History of forced repatriations (deportations) is touched on lightly, but was a forced measure affecting some half a million people. The effects of the Great Depression and its causes of migration - could leave readers with the impression that the Mexicans just wanted to come to the U.S. because it is great and not because of economics.

After reading this story with a critical and close sense, I have yet to find a true bias presented in the text. It seems that the story is quite simplistic and cheerful without any true inferences towards racial, cultural, religious and/or sexual bias. I am curious to know if any other team members have extracted any bias from this text.
On second thought there is a quote which states Llama Llama misses mama, which might infer that everyone has a mother.

On that note, in order to address that, I might open up a discussion to develop a community understanding of different family dynamics.

Nelly has darker skin so I wonder if someone would feel like llama didn't want to play with her because she has darker skin. Not sure if that is reading into it to much. Also, this book has a household family dynamic where playdates are run
